Imperial Legion

The Empire of Eldoria has both the largest and best trained standing army in all of Tarien. Resplendent in their shining banded armor, blue plumed helms, and golden capes, Legionaries are instantly recognizable throughout the continent and generally treated with the respect that their professional reputation has earned. Highly disciplined in combat and on parade, they protect the Empire's interests on the Island of Eldoria and abroad. As their reputation extends to their off duty behavior - violators are drummed out - most places welcome the Legionnaires. Via various treaties, Eldoria has standing bases in southern Prydith, Gartcha, and all along the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway.

The army itself is divided into different units, called legions, which both gives the army its name and facilitates management. Generals in charge of a legion, such as General de Champs and the 12th Legion are give full autonomy over their units. This autonomy allows each unit to function effectively on its own as the generals, report only to the Emperor himself. Within each legion smaller divisions also exist, all under the same principals of the ranking officer reporting up to only one person, creating an effective chain of command.

The legion provides an excellent opportunity for young men and women of the Empire who often have few other prospects. Not only does it provide food and shelter for all of its troop, it offers a steady source of income and the ability to gain any number of skills even beyond the marching and fighting. Each Legion has its own smiths, grooms, cooks, engineers, and countless support staff, all fitting nicely into its command structure. Legionnaires who serve for 20 years even earn a small pension.

Well trained in the art of war, Legionnaires spend most of their time patrolling the Empire's highways, including the great Trans-Rheuthengage Highway that it funded. As keepers of the peace, their presence deters bandits and provides a sort of emergency service for travelers. Few, however, have seen actual combat in recent years. With the exception of ongoing skirmishes in Carboth, war in the Inner Seas seems to have faded into history.
