Chemnos

Chemnos is a moderate place with a lot of flatlands and open plains, consisting of a temperate climate and a relative lack of the more severe varieties of weather that can be found elsewhere on this world. It is one of the larger countries in the world.   Their capital is the City of Solemika. This particular iteration of the city is only about a century old, but the use of the name Solemika for the capital of Chemnos is as old as the country is. It can make maps something of a difficult prospect, which serves the current overlord quite well for misdirection in terms of the cartographic reference works his country produces.   The capitol building is the Majar Palace. Stylistically, it does not quite suit the nature of the current regime, but it is such an old landmark that it is left alone. It is an elegant marble edifice with graceful curves and sweeping arabesques. The turrets and guard towers and laser fences do not precisely blend in, but the people of this country are well accustomed to anachronistic appearances.
Chemnos was one of the Seven Kingdoms. It's also where the Rinifen were first brought here by portal.

Aesthetic Notes

(See Geography notes for the Overlord world for comparison with other countries.)   Evil, science fantasy, temperate grassland. One of the original Seven, origin point of the Rinifen. Ranked the second least craziest country after Yng-tox.

A Few Common Questions Answered

  • What makes this country unique? Most of the countries in this world ascribe themselves down strict lines dividing a science based approach and a magical one. Chemnos adheres to both. This acceptance of both ways of life in turn leads to a rather calmer outlook, and allows for their rather eclectic architectural style to work.
  • Who lives here? Mainly humans, with a significant population of the draconic Rinifen found here in less populated areas. Beyond that, the usual mix of elves, dwarves, gnomes, etc.
  • What is the technology level? Some of it would fit quite well with 21st Earth, if that Earth also made use of the occasional robotic servant.
  • What is the magic like here? Used sparingly but to great effect. It's not used to power much, but in more the sense of a superpower, except they just call it magic instead of trying to hide it behind arcane terminology. Most people in the area make use of a select list of words to focus their magic. There are a few magical artifacts imbued with great power, but most of these end up stolen by other more magic-focused countries. As such, what few magical artifacts are left are treated with great respect.
  • Where is a map? I don't know. Likely one will be constructed as the tale of Meylany Bellgar is completed.
  • What is the culture like? There is a great emphasis on balance and acceptance in this culture, to the extent that they will often accept things that are complete nonsense simply to keep the peace. If a confrontation is to be had, one might be certain that it will involve subterfuge and back alley dealings. The housing situation is quite stable, and most people don't live in fear of a cataclysm destroying everything they've built. On the whole, they're a society of middle class neutrals who plan to live their lives relatively peacefully. Unless one is actively participating in the heroic/villainic culture, of course. Religion is tolerated as everything else, so long as it is practiced in a civil manner. Which is not to say they don't have a rather nasty underbelly devoted to all the people dealing privately with public insults in whatever way they see fit. The average daily concern is with maintaining a civil composure in public, rather than specifically avoiding wrongdoing.
  • What would the average family activity look like? The people of Chemnos are fond of tourism and other similar activities which take them out of the country, where they are more free to behave how they wish. At home, they would be expected to maintain some kind of a regular schedule to avoid inconveniencing those around them, who might need them to be predictable.
  • What are the politics like at the moment? The government recently switched a man named Thlmin who was truly vile, to the erstwhile Dr Weevil. As such, the country has taken more action of late in the international scale, working with the Council of Evil. The average person still remains out of it, and most such activity takes place out of the country.

History

The current leader is a name who styles himself as Dr Weevil. Formerly a man named Sujan Epps, he was a native of the country and a small business owner who sold specialized forms of staples such as flour and sugar. He did quite well for himself. His predecessor was a man named Thlmin, a name which no one can pronounce properly, and he was genuinely reviled by everyone as truly evil. Most of the monuments and buildings he constructed were burned down after his death on principle, because of the abuse he perpetuated.   Sujan Epps, on the day he became Dr Weevil, walked into the palace to consult with one of Thlmin’s advisors on possibly purchasing a large order of colored sugars. Two hours later, he had assassinated Thlmin, let in the forces of his cabal, and completely rewritten the security protocols for the Majar Palace. Since then, Dr Weevil has a well-deserved reputation for his hacking and programming skills.

Fine?

Both parties want to make sure Zhomek's Inferno doesn't come to pass, so they're mostly cool with each other.

Would be all out war if not for certain factors

Chemnos as a whole absolutely loathes their little apocalyptic cult, because every time they pop up, bad things happen. Mostly to the cult, but also to those around them, and they never go anywhere else with their stupid prophecies and bad news.   The cult doesn't really care about Chemnos, but generally tolerate them and usually want them to succeed in whatever external conflict is going on. But they also want to end the world, starting in Chemnos, so the relationship is fraught.
