Ruby Wright
Ruby Wright is a Human member of the Anhalo Investigators and founding member of The Abnormals.
Ruby was born in 754PS, in Cypren, Anhalo to parents Joey and Maria Pascal. Ruby originally shared their name, growing up with her parents, a successful lawyer and banker respectfully, and living in the wealth and glamour one could expect from Cypren high society.
She attended a prestigious private school in the countryside for advanced tuition from a young age, inheriting her parents intellect and resilience, always the brightest amongst her peers. Tragedy would strike however at the young age of ten, as she found her parents would not be returning from work, and instead had died in a tragic carriage accident, the wheel splitting off on the road causing a fatal crash.
The next few weeks were torture for the young girl, relatives and family friends crawling out the woodwork to try and get a slice of the not insignificant inheritance, all eagerly awaiting to see who would be responsible for young Ruby's care and responsible for the fortune. Several of these figures would never be seen again after they realised their fortune grabbing plans had not worked, some however would reappear eager to care for Ruby, such as Zebediah Shaw, a rich client of the Pascals who, while certainly interested in the potential of acquiring the fortune, did seem to care about the young girl.
Responsibility for Ruby however would come to Detective Raymond Wright, the brother of Ruby's mother and a detective in Anhalo Investigators. Raymond moved into Wright Manor along with Ruby, ensuring the young girl was comfortable and felt safe around him. Raymond would investigate this murder secretly, keeping it hidden from his niece due to his unwillingness to bring back the bad memories associated with her parents death.
For the next ten years, Ruby continued her education, now at a school within the city, so Raymond could keep her close. Ruby would naturally flourish in this environment, developing her education and coming to terms with the death of her parents, eventually seeing Raymond as a second father to her. In honour of him, at twenty years old, she would decide to begin her series of qualifications and official training to become an Anhalo Investigator.
Ruby excelled in her training, working directly under her Uncle and learning his tricks of the trade, developing her own networks of informants and reliable sources as well as building relationships with the figures introduced to her by her Uncle such as the information brokers Gebhart and Leigh, the smuggler Winston McShane, and even the famed hotelier Mrs Liu'tel in Trezzo.
Ruby completed her training and became a full fledged detective at the age of 26, working hard to earn her place and hone her skills of deduction. She quickly ingratiated herself amongst the other detectives and became a well liked and effective member of the team.
This blessed life continued only for another year however, as on the night of her 27th Birthday, still living with her Uncle in Wright Manor, there was a knock on the door, one of her colleagues informing her that Raymond had fallen victim to a carriage accident, one eerily similar to the one that killed her parents. Ruby fell deep into a pit of mourning, falling victim again to the loss of a parental figure.
A funeral for Raymond was held, with Ruby delivering the eulogy, after this she returned immediately to work, much to the worry of those around her. She fell into a deep depression, the only thing keeping her going being the routine and comfort of a job well done. She isolated herself socially, making no friends, finding no partners, blocking out those who she had knew while she was younger. Many came to see if she was ok, wanting to check up and offer their support to the young woman, but she told them all she was fine, that accidents happen. Ruby only focused on work, building her way up to Head Detective of her department, second only to her Captain, still the pit of despair was not filled, and Ruby became a shell of her former self.
One night, three years later and 30 years old, Ruby discovered something while working late, refiling the office after a particularly difficult case. She discovered an old case file from right before Raymond's death, one that must have been missed by the people cleaning out his desk after he died. It was a file of almost random scribbles, seemingly scrap paper or random reminders to most, but Ruby knew how her Uncle's mind worked, and pieced together his frantic scrawling's. Ruby discovered her parents had found some kind of secret while working, a secret Raymond himself had uncovered, a secret, Ruby imagined, led to their deaths. The only lead being a note with the name of a mercenary company, The Bitter Ring. Ruby immediately left a note for her Captain and left on a self decided sabbatical in order to chase these leads her parental figures had left her, her first sense of true purpose in many years.
On information from one of her contacts, Ruby headed south to Maubrin, The Fourteenth, burning much of her savings on travel and information of where this Bitter Ring group was last seen. In the small trade town of Falldale, money running low and leads running dry, Ruby took a job from Melvin Murgofield, the con-man and merchant that was responsible for bringing the Abnormals together. Together with the rest of the group they explored a temple to Azdur and bonded over their collective fears and newfound hatred of Melvin.
Upon leaving them temple, the newly established group set out in search of them that hired them, but would be ambushed on the road by the group Ruby had been investigating. The group's wagon was waylaid by William Prince, a lieutenant of the Bitter Ring, and he and his crew assaulted and knocked out the group capturing them for interrogation to see what Ruby knew and why she was following them.
Taunted and interrogated by Prince, the Abnormals broke out, engaging in a fight with both Prince and the second lieutenant of the group, Vesper Charis. The pair escaped by Ruby still managed to get some answers and leads, she knew that the Bitter Ring had been called back to her home of Anhalo for some high profile client, but who this could be was an unknown.
The Abnormals continued traveling with each other, constantly moving north closer to Ruby's destination. They saved the town of Houndsford from the pyromancer Fredrick Slater, Ruby investing in some broken down houses there, hoping to earn some passive income. For this act the group would be asked to attend the Dalry Winter Ball, brushing shoulders with the nobility and many of the important figures in the area. Ruby represented the Investigators while there, proudly wearing her badge and staying on the side-lines to watch how the party would unfold.
The events of the ball would send the Abnormals into the Dalry/Almus War, where Ruby continued to work her investigative skills in sniffing out the traitorous Crimson Corsairs and their role in potentially betraying the Dalran Army. Before she could confirm her findings however their camp was attacked, and Ruby thrown into war. This battle proved to be a new experience for the detective, her falling and requiring aid to regain her footing. The Abnormals would leave the warfront, shaken, and head to Swordbreak in pursuit of the Corsairs, and it would be here that Ruby found the next thread to pull that would lead her closer to home.
While working for Viscountess Ellen Seastar, Ruby and the Abnormals discovered Quintin di Simone and the new drug Rush. This led to the group saying their goodbyes to Almus, and traveling across Emperor's Bay to Trezzo, finally back in familiar ground for Ruby.
In Trezzo Ruby would reunite with a fellow detective Louie O'Hallerhan, who was investigating a gang known as The Red Ivys and their leader Vincenzo Waltz. Other members of the Abnormals had allies mixed up with their group, Sacorin Whistlegrace, brother of Tam who owed them money, and Hylax, the old friend and lieutenant of Control, who was leading the fight against the gang.
On somewhat familiar turf, Ruby would cash in favours with her Uncle's ally Winston McShane for information on the group, using her classically trained skilled to assist her party in ousting the drug pushing criminals. Eventually, through a meeting with Abraham Gillis, the Abnormals would discover the Bitter Ring's involvement with Waltz and his gang. At the racecourse this meeting had taken place, Ruby pushed for the other Abnormals to assist her in the ambush of Zoarack Half-Jaw, the mysterious leader of the mercenary company. This proved too much to handle however and the Abnormals were beaten savagely, with Zoarack fleeing into the wind.
With Waltz dead, Ruby and the Abnormals set their sights on the removal of his supplier, the Bitter Ring's mysterious client. Heading back home to Cypren and Wright Manor, the group settled in an made a plan of attack. Ruby reconnected with her former colleagues and Captain, informing them of what she had learned, and enlisting their help in avenging their colleague Raymond. Ruby also enlisted the help of her contacts Gebhart and Leigh, using them to discover the name of the Bitter Ring's client, the social club of Ruby's parents friend Zebediah Shaw, now run by an illusive man known as Dravin Cazamir. Gebhart and Leigh also informed them of an abattoir purchased by the Bitter Ring only a few months ago.
Lead and allies in hand, the group made their way to the Abattoir, discovering Bitter Ring presence along with multiple Vampires. The abattoir was a Rush production facility, being overseen by Vesper Charis, who managed to escape again. It turned out that the Bitter Ring had been hired by a higher vampire lord to help him bolster his own forces. They had plans to produce rush, a drug made from the blood of Vampires, in order to turn people into thralls throughout the Duchy and eventually further. Finally with some answers, but still no clue what secret her parents had discovered over two decades ago, the group and Ruby headed to The Opperice Club to try and find another lead.
Ruby was met at the club by her old friend Zebediah Shaw, who revealed to her that the club had been bought out by Cazamir many years ago, the vampire lord using it as a base of operation to plan his evil empire. Shaw was happy to give information, showing his distaste for Cazamir and his wicked ways, but the reunion was interrupted by William Prince who had ingratiated himself amongst the club. Luckily a fight was avoided, and the Abnormals and Prince engaged in a game of dice, the loser forced to reveal a truth. Prince and Ruby engaged themselves in mind games, the two using this opportunity to interrogate the other.
Prince revealed to Ruby and the group, that her parents had been killed over a simple clerical error. Cazamir had made a mistake that showed his true age and wealth as a Vampire, a fault discovered by Ruby's parents. Prince regaled how her parents had told Cazamir about this, and before they could reveal him he had ordered them killed. Barely holding her rage, Ruby asked why her Uncle was killed, and Prince told her he had discovered the same information, and so on the orders of Cazamir Prince loosened the wheels on his wagon and engineered for him to die.
Eager to get her revenge, Ruby and the Abnormals forced Prince to reveal the location of the main rush facility, and set out on a quest to destroy it. They found the location filled with Bitter Ring soldiers, vampires, and horrific alchemical golems all hostile to their actions. Regardless they fought through the gauntlet, pushing on until they reached the heart of the underground facility, and for the second time that day fought and battled Vesper Charis, finally executing one of the leaders of The Bitter Ring.
The victory would come at a cost however as Ruby would return home afterwards to find Wright Manor ablaze, her parents home burning in front of her as two of her allies lay dead. It had been destroyed by Prince and his soldiers while they was fighting Vesper. Once again almost falling into depression, instead Ruby and the Abnormals worked alongside their companion Nag and Ruby's Investigator allies to form a plan to assault the Opperice Club and destroy Prince and Cazamir. They also investigated the whereabouts of Zoarack Half-Jaw, the leader of the Bitter Ring seemingly dissapeared.
Less than a week after killing Vesper, the Abnormals and their allies assaulted the Opperice Club, fighting through and killing numerous vampires and other members of the club who sided with Cazamir. They eventually fought their way to the top floor, fighting Cazamir and Prince until the floors collapsed and all were separated. Working their way out of the rubble, Ruby spied Cazamir coming out, the vampire turning into a swarm of rats and scurrying away to heal in his coffin. Prince however was discovered crawling out of the rubble, barely able to fight, Ruby achieved her revenge, executing the man who killed her Uncle in brutal fashion.
With information from the Investigators, Ruby and the Abnormals then tracked down Zoarack, finding that he was renting lodgings within the city, approaching his lodgings they found him making breakfast, he told them he knew his fate was coming, and that the business with her family had been just that, business. He seemed a man broken by his knowledge of destiny, but nevertheless, he attacked with vigour and proved a challenge for Ruby to finally finish the Bitter Ring with a bullet to the forehead.
Zoarack's house provided them the information they needed to find Cazamir's coffin, his tomb located in the same graveyard Ruby's parents had been buried in. After a quick visit to their graves, the Abnormals descended into Cazamir's tomb, finding the elder vampire amongst the rats and ghosts. A quick fight ensued, Cazamir weak from their previous encounter proved little threat, staked and decapitated by the party.
Her revenge achieved and the case of her parents murder closed, Ruby was offered to return to her job and leave the party. Her life's work completed, the offer was tempting, however the other Abnormals still had quests their needed help on, help Ruby could provide, and so the detective said her goodbyes, and continued her sabbatical as an adventurer.
Ruby would continue to travel with the Abnormals on their adventures, traveling to the Bonshall Woods and fighting Augustus Edwell Jr, then flying to The Independent Merchant Nation of Phosana and getting thrown in Peregot Prison alongside the rest of the Abnormals after their fight with Malice. Regardless of where they next went, Ruby Wright would continue to assist her friends, and use her brains and pistols to spread investigative justice throughout the world.
