Floating Edge

The evening of the 33 Athari'el the well known performers, the Flying Twins, will kickstart their new show in the Floating Edge. This is something you can't miss! Expect nerve wrecking stunts on the floating islands above the Cloud Lake.
— Extract from Infor News
The Floating Edge is a high end tavern in Infor, the capital of the Elven country Aelerium. What makes it stand out is also the reason for its name.   Infor is known for the Cloud Lake, a crater with higher edges that is always filled with clouds. The Floating Edge is build upon the edge of the crater and part of the seats are actually on small floating islands near the edge.   Many performers come hear to show their skills on the small floating islands near the tavern. Falling is probably a death sentence since no one has returned from the Cloud Lake. This has however not stopped performers to get fame by using the islands to enhance their performance.

Extra Information

Location
This high end tavern is located in Infor, the capital of Aelerium.
Construction Date
947 AE
Owner
Floating Edge is owned by the Kambor family, one of the richest families in Aelerium
Function
It is 'the' place to be performers to make a name for themselves. Besides that it is also where the Kambor family makes most of their bussiness deals.

The Tavern

Expensive

The Floating Edge is a tavern that is mainly meant for the rich of Aelerium. Prices are high but so is the quality of the food and drinks. Most of the wines come from the excellent vineyards of Aelerium but some are also imported from other Elven countries and even Varena.   When it comes to food the Floating Edge is also one of the best. You can find some of the best meats here and even some exotic meat imported from the Baidan Jungle west of Aelerium.

Kambor Family

The owning family of the Floating Edge is one of the most important ones in Aelerium, the Kambor family. Since they are the most prominent traders in all manners of Falls and items created with them, they are quite wealthy.

Meeting Place

For conducting their business deals the Kambor family also uses the private rooms of the Floating Edge. Here the clients can get the same quality food but without the noise from other visitors.   The Kambor family also makes full use of items using Falls here. For example, food and drinks are served from floating platters, lighting can be controlled on command and music can be heard in the room even without performers present. This seems to impress potential clients as the Kambors are great at procuring new business.

Performances

Of course the tavern is also known for the perfomances held there. The location itself gives performers many opportunities thanks to the floating islands. The Floating Edge is often frequented by acrobats jumping between the various small islands. Also musicians tend to use these islands even though they do it more to show that they are not afraid from the height.   There is, however, not really a reason to be afraid as the Kambor family allows all performers to use some of their items created with Falls. This actually prevents anyone from falling down. If someone does fall they end up floating and can actually 'swim' back to the edge.

Flying

Thanks to the gear the Kambor family creates and provides the clients can actually do a bit of flying themselves. Clients who want to fly get the same gear that is giving to the performers that prevents them from falling.   After jumping from the edge the clients can actually fly a bit around. The flying is, however, closer to swimming. Nonetheless, it gives those brave enough to try an amazing time and great view. Floating above the Cloud Lake is something no client is bound to forget.

Theft

Some people have tried to actually fly away with the gear that is provided by the tavern. This has thus far never been succesful since some of the guards of the city have the same gear. This has, however, not stopped people from trying resulting in many occassion of a flying chase near the edge of the tavern.

Layout

Tavern

The first room visitors will enter when they go to the Floating Edge is the tavern room. Here people come together for drinks. The bar is supplied with many types of wine. Those that are not rich enough can easily squander away their money if they are not careful when picking wines.   Next to the main tavern room is the terrace where most people sit to view the performances. The shows can also be seen from the main tavern room through the windows but they really don't offer the best view. If you want a good seat at the terrace you better come early (or pay a large amount of money, that also works)

Dining

Those who want good food come to this area of the tavern. Even when there are no performances there is usually someone playing the piano. The fireplace also makes this one of the warmest and most comfortable rooms to be. Along the edges there are also some booths for the patrons who pay a bit more.   In the nearby kitchen some of the best chefs of Aelerium work to make the visit of the patrons in the dining room perfect. When visting Infor there is no better place to get excellent food.
Recommendation of the Chef

Private rooms

For their business meeting the Kambor family uses these private rooms. If food is involved the one at ground level is used, otherwise the prospects and the family member meet on the first floor.   In here the Kambors showcase there best products and quality Falls. Officially the family is said to not sell Crystal Casting Armors but most assume that they do as only the other main families can go against them, and they don't care.

Floating Islands

All performances are held at the floating islands. If the performing artist is not brave enough they stand on the floating island that is connected with a bridge. Otherwise they jump accross to the central one. It is still safe as they can't really fall thanks to the gear the Kambors provide. Nonetheless, jumping above clouds is too much for some. It is a common belief that artists who don't make the jumps will lose their fame quickly.   There is one larger island connected with a bridge that also has some seating. Patrons who sit here also receive the protection gear against falling. The seating , however, offers the best view. But also the most expensive one.

Weather

The outside areas of the tavern are actually protected from bad weather and lack of light. The Kambor family uses their skills with Falls to create many effects in the area. They created flying globes of light that ensure that even when it is dark people can see what is going on near the floating islands.   But the most important uses is to have a degree of weather control. A wind dome is created which managed to blow away rain, hail or snow. In addition to that there are several Embercrystal Falls that ensure the area is comfortably warm.

This must be a great place for a concert! Can they use Falls to protect the area against bad weather or do they have to cancel in those cases? And has anyone tried to make away with the flying equipment they were borrowing? :p

Mar 18, 2022 10:44

Well they actually could protect form weather and I will add that to the article now :p And yeah people have definetly tried to 'fly' away :) the ended up with a big fine because the guards can also fly ;)

Hmm, interesting twist for the floating islands being used as an acrobat's playground. Dangerous, at that! Great use of the maps from Inkarnate as well, adding in some descriptions for them. Nice touch.

Thanks! ^^ Yeah love using that tool for my maps :) It is quite dangerous but luckily they get some protection gear :p

A very nicely made article! Alternating the text columns and inserting images makes it very easy to read. I particularly like the inclusion of so many maps to help illustrate the layout, and ending with the full interactive map.

Another splendid piece of work! I love the inclusion of the map and cutting it up in pieces to highlight the layout of the tavern. I'm already looking forward to having a drink, sounds lovely. ^^   Keep up the good work! :D

Thank you! ^^ Yeah I did that for the ship challenge and Keepers library and thought why not do it for the tavern as well :p

Oh my that map! Awesome styling with the close-ups and whatnot. This place sounds awesome, even though I'm afraid of heights.   Hm... Evil plan: Sleeping potion in drinks and meals. Throw people over the edge. Fake evidence to make it look like the result of a drunken brawl. Profit.

Thank you for the kind words ^^ Haha yeah that could be done but I think guards will quickly notice something like that happening. Unless they were in on it :o

Great job as always Kefke. Your map is simply beautiful. For the performing artists, is the wind ever a problem, as I imagine it would sometimes be in a floating city, or is that also able to be controlled magically? And for inquiring minds who wish to judge this family based on some of your other articles, what is the opinion of the Kambors on the treatment of dragons?

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.
Mar 18, 2022 11:04

Thank you so much :) The city is actually not floating, it is next to a crater that is always filled with clouds. So the wind is not that powerful. But as Amélie mentioned the family has to knowhow to do some weathercontrol so I think I will add a section on that :)   Ah good question about the Kambors! Well the good part is that Elves don't use Dragons for their magic since they have many magical families and don't have the need. Their magical knowhow is also that good that they don't need to recharge many of their items and even if they do they can use an Elven magic user.

I feel like I'm just repeating what so many others have already pointed out, but let's make double sure it does not go un-noticed! My absolute favorite part of this article is how the map itself is broken up into segments and expanded on. The CSS made it a pleasing ready without too many distractions.   As far as the content, I've always wanted to fly, so a place such as this seems so magical Well done!

Love the floating Islands idea - particularly that they are smaller islands used for performances and flight entertainment. The article looks super nice too!   Check out my Tavern challenge entry: The Destill - Dwarven Spice Tavern

A fascinating tavern! I think it's nice to see you incorporate the Falls. The superstition that a performer who doesn't dare make the jump won't make it very long in their career is a great touch.

Very nice, I love a good wineshop, and such spectacular entertainment! You might want to use the excerpt field so those who aren't familiar with your world can just mouse-over "Falls" and get a quick description. It could use one last quick proofread, but it's little stuff. Good job!

Very cool location for a tavern, and the map is amazing. I love flying being part of the experience as well.
