Life in the Empire

Birth and a baby's introduction to society

Although aided by midwives working for the temple of RYSHE, birth is a dangerous time for both mother and child. The child is not named until they have seen their tenth day. Upon which they are gifted their name and an amulet in a ceremony held at their home. If they reach their first birthday they are given the full rights of citizenship.   Within 30 days of birth their parents, grandparents, or a representative of the family must legally declare their birth at the YE IRA(census office).

Imperial Naming conventions

All citizens of the Empire must follow the following naming system:
  1. Their birth order.
  2. An adjective denoting their birthplace.
  3. A formal given name.
  4. A personal nickname.
  5. Birth family name if a married woman (with KYID- prefix).
  6. Family surname (with LAA- prefix for bastards).

Childhood

Children under the age of 7 are treated as infants and left in the care of women. They are expected to help with the running of the house until they enter education.

Entering education (ages 7-14)

At this age all boys, baring heirs from KROMYI families(see below), enter formal education. This education is funded by the state as an educated citizenry is a boon to the Empire. In the early years of their education their aptitude and temperament are monitored closely to correctly place the appropriate apprenticeship when they reach adolescence.   Immediately upon arrival children would be taught to read and write. Wrestling and other physical activities would be interspersed to keep the children's attention.   By the first year of education children are placed in peer groups of similar skills and placed under the care of a teacher who monitor their aptitude and abilities to aid their further placements.   As they get older rhetoric and music are added to the lessons.

Apprenticeships (ages 14-19)

At this age the youths have finished their basic schooling and are ready to begin training for their eventual employment.

Heirs exception and fostering

Unlike the rank and file citizenry, who are trained to primarily be loyal to their home city, the heirs of the political elite are trained to see themselves as members of the larger Empire.   They tend to be educated at home with private tutors and regularly watch council sessions to learn their future role in society.   Fostering, while not mandatory, is common for young men between ages of 14 and 20 years of age. Usually to meet the family of a potential bride or to form other alliances.

Coming of age

When a free man comes of age he is given a PLYIE made of copper. The ring is to be worn on the index finger of the right hand. This ring is considered proof of a man's status and right to vote in certain situations.

Courtship

Courtship is short and unromantic. When a child comes of age they are taken to their local city to visit a matchmakers. Marriages are considered a business partnership writ in blood. The decision is made by the eldest female of the family, with input from the head of the household.   The matchmaker coordinates with the family to match young adults together to make the best offspring for their social class.   Once this has been done the parents of the matched pair meet with a priest of ESOPE to create a marriage contract. With this contract the couple can meet with a chaperone present to get to know one another. A year after their first meeting a STIO witnesses their wedding vows. The marriage is then recorded in the IRA(census) for taxation purposes.   The newlyweds are given a copper bracelet, to be worn around the right arm, by their family.

Married life

The purpose of marriage is children. Having children is a duty to the Empire, rewards are given to the families who raise more than 3 children to adulthood. However if a couple don't wish to have any more children, contraceptives and abortive tinctures are available from a priest ofRYMA.

Death and Funerary rites

When a citizen dies their body is cared for at home until the temple of KRAMAGE sends priests to collect the body to preserve it until the full moon. On the full moon funerary pyres are lit and the bodies are cremated. The ashes are collected into urns and placed with their ancestors in the city mausoleum.
