PEYRA WAHIERBI - Colonists

The descendants of free citizens of the PEYRA IKSER who settled north. Their homeland lost they decided to invade and civilise all of the lands that are now known as the PROBES'ORYM IRSARBI. In accordance with the KYKO HENS WAHIE, all of the city-states are ruled by a senate as the only leader in the Empire was the Emperor. These senates became corrupt long before the BIKSOOD(great flood) wiped out the empire due to disinterest from the homeland. In modern times they exist largely as a fig leaf to cover the political power of the de-facto ruling families.

Social Classes

Rank Description Rights and Obligations
KROMYI (noble) The most prestigious of all classes, their wealth comes from the ownership of property. These people are able to live lavishly without ever doing a day's work. If they do decide to labour they are typically placed in positions of power. Their surnames come from ancient imperial names. Rights: An automatic seat at the WYKSE (senate) and a right to bring forward issues for the WYKSE to vote on.   Obligations: Income from property is taxed at 70%. All other income is "donated" to the City.
LAA KROMYI (bastard children of nobles) The children of nobles born out of wedlock. They are raised and educated in their noble parent's house, when they reach maturity their noble family finds them high ranking employment opportunities. These opportunities are typically paths to improve the power or prestige of their family. This class is also the only class beneath the nobility that a noble will consider as a marriage candidate. Their surname is typically their noble parent's surname with the prefix LAA, e.g. LAAVELA for a bastard of the Vela family. Rights: The right to enter the WYKSE for reasons other than employment.   Obligations: Income is taxed at 70%.
FAEMARIM (middle class, lit. trader) The educated members of the workforce. Rights: Automatic membership to the appropriate KLYIRAED(guild).   Obligations: Income is taxed at 20%
KORRYNTA (citizen) Rights: Ownership of property.   Obligations: Income is taxed at 10%
QAA (peasant) These are slaves who have bought their way out of slavery but have not earnt enough to purchase their citizenship. This class is considered a transitional class, citizens with fewer rights in exchange for not needing to meet the obligations of citizenship. Rights: Their name is officially recorded in census data granting them the right to legal representation. Food and shelter can be provided by an YISTO MAT (poorhouse).   Obligations: Unemployment is criminalised.
QYANARIM (slave) Chattel slaves, descended from prisoners captured in raids. Considered largely beneath notice but the cities rely on their work. Rights: Physical protection from harm, under anti-vandalization laws. Food and shelter is provided by their master.   Obligations: Absolute obedience to their master.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names for most citizens are the occupation of their father. Only the KROMYI(noble) take surnames from earlier times.

Culture

Common Dress code

Outfits are typically linen or silk, wool is only used if they travel south to colder climates. All cities grow linen on slave plantations to produce the necessary clothing. Hats and hair coverings started as a common-sense way to avoid sunstroke. Their neighbours the ELTRIYOI GRYER or ╞╪╡╚ typically leaving their hair uncovered has contributed to it being seen as inherently sexual and fetishised. Because of this slaves will wear a cloth to cover their hair even if they are otherwise completely naked in a desperate attempt to avoid being seen as promiscuous or sexually available.   Most free men will wear at least a loincloth and a tunic with sandals. Richer men would also add an over the shoulder chiton or chlamys held up with an elaborate broach. They are traditionally white, but tunics can be dyed bright colours and use damask patterns as a display of wealth. Freeborn women typically wear a linen chiton held in place by decorative pins. Their wealthy counterparts would typically also wear a himation. These clothes are typically dyed with local ingredients, the brightness of the dye and the quality of the weave were markers of a wearer's current wealth and status, whilst jewellery is viewed as how wealthy their patron is.

Coming of Age Rites

Marriage is considered the only coming of age rite needed. When two people are ready to be married, their matchmakers organise for an STIO(Censor) to witness their oath before the WARSEA HENSˈLYO(wall of laws). The STIO(Censor) then notes the marriage in the IRA(census) and a copper bracelet is given to the newlyweds, members of the KROMYI(noble class) are given bracelets with their LYKSA(family) seal.

Common Taboos

Unique to the KARO PIYOR(Colonists) is the taboo of showing hair. This began as habitually wearing head coverings, a practical solution to living much closer to the equator than the KARORBI ANSEOD(Imperial homeland). When the BAKSM GEO(unification offer) was rejected uncovered hair became associated with savages, and eventually sexual availability.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Marriages are considered business partnerships writ in blood. They are arranged by the eldest female of the family, with input from the head of the household. A partner is selected based on bloodline, reputation, attributes, and doweries. These are not arranged until both parties are adults in order to get an accurate view of skills and attributes, allowing partnerships to be most effective. When a pair has been decided, they will meet each other in a public place to see how they get along on their own, or if they will need the help of counselors.
