History

Port Hugo started as a small fishing settlement, one of the oldest in the area. When it started, Tilane was still thriving. The owner, Hugo Permalion, was a notorious hermit that took his extended family into seclusion.   They rode out the Rape of Tilane and the Scalepurge in relative peace, as they have most other wars. Simply put, until Sacqueline began taking over, Port Hugo was simply not worth the effort of raiding it.   Once it became the primary trade waypoint for the Stonecutters Society's Sacquene branch, its days as an independent entity were numbered. By 850, the officers of the mayor and magistrate were both disbanded in Port Hugo.

Architecture

Port Hugo started out as a small fishing village with wooden homes and little else. More than a century of total dependence on Sacqueline have turned it into a battered shantytown with rotting wooden planks supplemented by poorly hewn driftwood. Most houses in Port Hugo look as though they're one stiff wind away from collapsing. The rest look as though that wind has already blown through.

Geography

Port Hugo sits inside the floodplain of the Grasping River, though a series of bleed-dykes keep the river from swallowing the place with flooding.

Natural Resources

Port Hugo has a subsistence industry plying the river for fish and prawns. They also pull up pearls from the river, but all of these as well as the occasional gemstone are claimed by the Stonecutters Society and by local ordinance are illegal to sell by anyone outside of the guild.
