Eldermeare

"Eldermeare is a canton of shopkeepers, strip miners, and slave drivers. If you ask them, they're carters because of the merchants always hauling out of the place, and I suspect that comes from a deep well of shame in their own true natures."   Margrave Arronax Skinner, Elector of Cambreath

Structure

More than any other canton, Eldermeare is a canton at the mercy of it's Plutarchs.

Culture

Eldermeare is a canton of merchants and politicians. Even the poorest of Eldermeare see themselves as temporarily broke Plutarchs, and many have dreams of holding the Barony for themselves even if realistically they will never have the opportunity to even make the attempt.

Demography and Population

Mostly Eldermearan Humans. Eldermeare has the highest number of Elvenkind citizens in the Confederation.

Territories

The eastern border is demarcated by the Black River and the northern portion of the Screaming Marshes. They also claim Lake Uirebael, though in practice they share it jointly with Doroinir Nimloth and The Brass Tower. Their southern border is level with the fork of the Sangwan River, as established by a trade agreement in 744. The northern border terminates inside the Pine Barrens, perhaps on the banks of the Saltriver though this is hotly contested with the Northrealm. On the west, the border encompasses most of Foyle Wood, and the eastern reaches of the Great Grass Ocean.

Military

Eldermeare is home to many mercenaries both inside the Bounty Hunter's Lodge and those acting as free agents. Even before the Stackel Revolt, but especially afterwards, the Congress of Merchants has hesitated in the use of Balatar Militias.   The home guard of Eldermeare are known as the Opaline Corps, and are essentially a public-private partnership between the canton and the Opaline Guild that runs it.

Technological Level

The wealth of Eldermeare gives them the edge of science, theological, and thaumatological research.

Religion

The most common religion in Eldermeare is Demiurgery, particularly among the upper class. There is a pervasive dream of becoming a new aristocracy, and the landed merchants are halfway there already.

Foreign Relations

Eldermeare suffers from raiding by wild elves from the forests of Doroinir Nimloth, yet maintains good relations with the kingdom as a whole.   They pick at Cambreath and the Northrealm, scrabbling for bits of land on the borders of the more martial cantons.   Eldermearans have no designs on Prunyth territory, and probably won't unless some valuable resource is discovered there.   They maintain good relations with Wupan.

Agriculture & Industry

The major cash flow comes from the mines of Carcolh. Other settlements mine tin, copper, steel, gold and silver.

Trade & Transport

Being mostly landlocked aside from the Sangwan River, Eldermeare relies heavily on trade caravans. The cities are all trade hubs, with wagon trains setting out at all hours of the day and night and returning. The Caravaneer Mutual Defense League officially owns the roads, receiving a stipend from the canton to protect and maintain them.

Education

Eldermeare most often uses paid tutors that spend their days either living in the home of a wealthy family to teach their children, or making circuits of less affluent homes exchanging their services for coin.
