Snowbright

One of two major cities in Dragon Maw Mountains, the northern mountain range of Nowch . Home to The Snowbright Gladiatorial Arena . The city rests in a valley and is surrounded by snowy peaks with very rare cloud cover resulting in a luminescent glow at night and all year.

Demographics

Primarily Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, and Dwarves. There is also a small but notable population of Goliaths.

Government

The Merchant Council handles most things in the city. A blind donation based system is run each year that determines ones position in the council. This forces merchants to balance personal profits vs control in the city. The results of this system is a fluctuating but often high amount of money for the city to use for infrastructure and public programs. While there is still poverty in the city little to no one has to go hungry or live on the street. The primary sources of income for the city are mining and the subsequent trades that take advantage of access to high quality material, and the gladiatorial arena and the subsequent tourism and gambling.

Defences

A 15 feet high stone wall surrounding the city, a 15 feet and 15 feet wide dry moat around the wall and only one major road into the valley that's maintained with the rest of the valley being predominantly slick ice fields.

Industry & Trade

The predominant attraction for consistent income in the city is the arena: betting, entry fees, and tickets to watch the fights are all strong consistent sources of income. Much of the cities population can connect their employment to the arena in some way. Other major industry is merchant trade. Mining and subsequent crafting of tool, weapons, armor, jewlery and other such things are the major export of the city along with the raw resources. additionally being deep in the Dragon Maw Mountains gives the adventurers here unique access to abandoned dragon hordes, former giant strongholds, and other locations ripe with treasure. The biggest risk to the city is failing to import enough food which has created a new industry of magic user creating sustainable green houses through out the city.

Infrastructure

The city is very sturdy the city rarely has a serious thaw, regularly sitting at or just below 0. As such, snow and ice have been used to insulate and reinforce buildings and walls. the sewer system exists but has to be worked on regularly to avoid freezing.

The two most predominant groups with in the city are the Merchant Council , the functioning government, and the Gladitorial Houses, which most participants of the arena need to be a part of to compete in fights.

History

Founded close to 1000 years ago Snowbright started as a mining settlement. As mining proved progressively lucrative but progressively dangerous, adventurers and mercanaries had to be hired for protection. This microcosm of skilled fighter all gathered together led to the development of a culture of testing each others strengths and eventuallly evolved into the Arena. While the mines productivity waivered the arena only benifited as less security was required but he journey south was long and so more adventurers needed work while they waited for new veins to be found. This perfect storm of ups and downs created a moving tide of combatants and rematches that create such buzz that even nobles from the south became interested in the fighting and eventually the full fledged gladiatorial arena was built to house all fights and the gladiatorial houses were formed to create order and a semblance of stability for for fighters; assuring regular pay and suitable care. This led to the need for local goods to sell to fighters, which created the culture of skilled artisans and eventually the Merchant Council formed from smart merchants who realized the only way to keep their businesses afloat and the arena working was to keep the population healthy and all elements of the work force strong.

Architecture

Stone in the primary building material of the city, with stone from mines needing somewhere to go and the lack of trees. large stone home and stores are everywhere in Snowbright.

Geography

The city sits in the center of a large ovular valley with high snow covered peaks.
