Neophyte Trial
The Neophyte Trial is the main way in which new prospects gain entry into one of The Kingdom of Rotheval's Knightly Orders. The exact form of the trials differs each time, depending on the order and the knight giving the trial, but commonly involves several rounds of competition between would-be-Neophytes designed to test their physical capabilities with shows of strength, stamina, speed and so on, but often also the mental capabilities are tested, with puzzles and riddles to test the ability to reason and find solutions, or tests of patience and perseverance.
In some Chapters far from the Order's seat, the Neophyte Trial is taken only when a Knight knights their current Neophyte, allowing youth from the area around the chapter-house to compete to replace said Neophyte. In these cases there can only be two winners, one to attend the newly promoted Knight, the other to attend the Knight he was trained under.
In larger Chapters or in the main seat of the Order itself, the Trial can result in any number of new Noephytes being inducted into the order. In this case, they are usually overseen by a Master of Neophytes, and the Trials are geared more toward testing the capabilities of each potential neophyte than pitting them against one another.
The Trial was open to any attendee of the festival who wished to compete. At the urging of the host ser Allon Southbay, no fee was asked of the competitors, as the local Lord felt it important that even those with the least means in the city have the opportunity to compete.
The Trial involved several tests - a race from one end of the City Walls to the other, diving from the Dockyard to retrieve items from the seabed, several spirited games played across the bustling Marketplace, finally culminating in a test where ser Dawsin and the remaining hopefuls balanced on narrow wooden pillars set out over the sea, with the knight striking out at each of the neophytes in turn with a Staff, trying to unbalance them from their precarious perch.
Darrik won the competition and was awarded the position as ser Dawsin's new Neophyte. Sylvina was chosen from among the other competitors to become ser Delmar's Neophyte. Both were homeless orphans living on the streets of the city, validating ser Allon's demand for equality. They have both since become knights in the The Order of The Wyrm themselves, with ser Sylvina going on to found a Templar Order.
