Seersbury
When I look upon her walls, / Glinting gold in the daybreak, / My heart must soar. / For I know that she shall stand for another dawn. / This day, and the next, / Now and forevermore.Seersbury has been the Kingdom of Crathlia's capital city as long as the Alderleys have reigned.
Demographics
Government
As the center of Crathlia's government, Seersbury is highly influenced by the myriad of politicians, Senators and judges alike, that work there. Ultimately, the city and the surrounding lands answer to the Hereditary Monarch of Crathlia, the head of the Alderley Clan, directly. In practice, the Hereditary Crown Royal has historically been the chief decision-maker.
The city has a police department and a local court manned by young judges hoping to one day move to the High Court. Its laws governing Amalgams are fairly strict, and a citywide weapons ban has been in place for two hundred years, citing the importance of protecting those who make Crathlia's decisions.
Defences
Seersbury is surrounded by a fortified wall made from Paragon-manipulated stone and metal that has stood (with repairs and enhancements) since the mid-700s. It has one heavily-monitered trainline entrance and exit, the construction of which in the early 1200s was highly controversial but ultimately backed by Queen Mildred Alderley Blackburn. Hoverplanes may also enter the city, but must identify themselves beforehand or be shot down by the guards on the wall.
History
Seersbury was founded by King Matthew Alderley the Great in 722 as the capital of his new kingdom and the location of his palace. He wanted a city with no major Colonial ties and history (unlike Lexport), a new start for the people of Crathlia. The wall was constructed during the reign of King Matthew's daughter after his death in combat.
The kings and queens of Crathlia have always held court in Seersbury, and the palace has always stood on the same grounds. The surrounding lands of High Valley house most of the nobility, other than the families of the dukes and duchesses and other landed nobility who choose to live in their historic manor houses. Seersbury is the city where Crathlia's fate has always been decided, and thus its history is the history of the Kingdom of Crathlia itself. I thus find it hard to summarize.
Tourism
Seersbury is visited primarily by students learning about Crathlia's government and history. Tours are available of the High Court, the High Cathedral, and, for the well-connected, the Senate chamber and the public floor of the royal palace. The lower sectors also host museums dedicated to the history of the monarchy.
Architecture
Seersbury's architecture is primarily in the style of the Dark Age: stone castles and metal and gemstone decorations. The Senate building is in the somewhat more recent style of the new millenium, with its gabled roofs and towers, accented in gold and the gemstones of all the High Clans, representing noble unity. Generally, most of the buildings are at least two hundred years old and require ongoing maintanance, restoration, and modernization.
Geography
Seersbury stands near the convergence of two of Crathlia's rivers. The land around it is relatively fertile and was used as farmland during the Colonial Era (and to some degree today). The low, rolling hills are covered in moss and grass, dotted with rock and the occassional forest.
