North Lautney

North Lautney is the Kingdom of Crathlia's most important island. Not only is it largest by area, it holds Seersbury, the capital of Crathlia, as well as Lexport, Crathlia's largest city and one of its centers of commerce. It is also the location of Everdon Academy, where the nobility is educated.   North Lautney's rule is split between four High Clans: the Alderleys, the Colbreaks, the Blackburns, and the Evenbrooks.

Geography

The landscape of the island is green rolling hills breaking into craggier peaks to the north. Creeks turn to rivers, which wind through the forests and fields. Cities and towns dot the island, many sprawling far past their original bounds. The northern shores are sandy, while the south breaks into sheer cliffs.

Natural Resources

The southwest, governed by the Evenbrooks, is one of Crathlia's two major farming regions. Grains, potatoes, and soybeans are some of its chief crops. Sheep and goats are also grazed there.   The middle region, governed by the Blackburns, is often harvested for wood. It also holds smaller farms and mines, and is something of a jack of all trades, though a master of none.   The north, governed by the Colbreaks, holds some of Crathlia's most productive coal and iron mines.

History

Northern Inis na Elathán, being the closest to Inis Baile Mor, was the first island of modern-day Crathlia to be colonized. During Flaithrí's rule, Inis na Elathán was split down the middle and thus North Lautney was born.   North Lautney later became the birthplace of the Kingdom of Crathlia. The early Alderley kings and queens ruled North Lautney alone, only later expanding their kingdom to the other islands. Today, it remains the center of Crathlian government.

Duchies

Today, North Lautney is ruled by four High Clans. The Alderley Clan was, of course, the first; it rules High Valley, which has been primarily inhabited by the nobility who satellite the Crathlian capital of Seersbury since the 800s.   The Duchy of Colbreak was the second to be established, enstated by King Matthew the Great himself to reward Alastair Colbreak. The duchy was initially comprised Lexport alone, but quickly expanded to its present borders. Lexport does remain its primary concern.   The Duchy of Blackburn has historically undergone the most flux in borders, competing with the Evenbrook clan and other clans for land and status. It is currently a long strip of land in the middle of North Lautney. The Blackburns managed to hold North Firesbay, once a highly-contested city. Because of the inconsistent leadership, many of its cities and towns are self-governing.   The Duchy of Evenbrook is a farming region, coveted by the Blackburn clan and others. Its largest city is Catersburg.
