Campaign Recap
Mosk Draws the Flames Card
On 29 Tarsakh, Mosk drew the Flames card from the Deck of Many Things while in Wave Echo Cave with Collateral Damage.
Later that day, Mosk was killed while Collateral Damage fought Nezznar and his henchmen.
Collateral Damage Meets Brophilius
On 1 Mirtul, Herb Stoner (in tiefling form), Rayphlárd and Tubby walked into the Phandalin town center to find Lords' Alliance agent Don-Jon Raskin at Stonehill Inn. While walking toward the inn, the trio noticed a horned devil sitting on the ground at the Shrine of Luck.
Herb nodded at the devil while walking by him, attempting to pass him without stopping, but the devil stood up and started talking. The devil identified himself as Brophilius and said he recognized they were a part of Collateral Damage.
Herb attempted to keep walking. Brophilius said "That bugbear Smokey told me about you. You may look like us, but you’re not of our blood. Are you having fun in your devil costume? I can turn you back into what you really are: a puny, weak gnome. What’s one good reason why I shouldn’t?"
Brophilius then explained how he was summoned to the Material Plane when someone drew the Flames card from the Deck of Many Things, but when Mosk died before Brophilius could claim his soul Brophilius was trapped without a way back to the Nine Hells.
Brophilius then stared at Rayphlard, saying "You must be the one who drew the Knight card. That one (Tubby) ... I can tell. He’s here because of me. The deal I made with Olshirik to create that deck was a mistake. It’s time to make things right.
"I can sense it nearby," he continued. "Give me the deck, now, or I’ll kill you and take it myself." Rayphlard then handed him the deck, and Brophilius drew the Throne card.
Brophilius then said "Well, maybe I don’t need to go back. Maybe I’ll stay on this plane for a while. Does anyone know where Longwood is? I need to introduce them to their new king."
While Brophilius pondered his new future, his imp servants Eddie and Yep reappeared. Eddie grabbed the Deck of Many Things away from Brophilius while he was distracted, he and Yep went invisible for a moment, and they reappeared with cards in their hands. Eddie drew the Moon card and Yep drew the Fates card.
Eddie then said "So, it looks like I get to wish for anything I want. Well, I don’t want to be dead anymore. I want to go back to whatever I was before going to the Nine Hells. And Yep, with your card, you can reverse anything that happened in the past. How about we do the same thing?" Yep simply replied, saying "Yep!" The two imps concentrated, disappeared, then reappeared as humans.
One of the humans appeared in regal attire, and the other was dressed as a guard. The one dressed in regal attire touched the other on the shoulder and said "Karl, it's time to go back to Port Llast," and they disappeared again. Brophilius appeared to not care about Eddie and Yep leaving him; he flew away, apparently looking for Longwood.
Brophilius Spotted Flying North
On 3 Mirtul, while leaving the Brontide Cliffs, Collateral Damage spotted Brophilius flying in the air. He was heading north. The group decided to not pursue him.
Rayphlard's Alternate Timeline
On 6 Mirtul, Collateral Damage interrupted a ritual by the Cult of Talos at the Wayside Inn. During the climax of the fight, the wild magic of Rayphlárd's sword Talon transported him to an alternate timeline.
In the alternate timeline, Rayphlard and the alternate versions of Collateral Damage plane shifted to Cania, the eighth layer of the Nine Hells of Baator. In order to return to his own timeline, Rayphlard needed to find Brophilius in Cania and kill him, since Brophilius helped create the Deck of Many Things (which was the source of Rayphlard's sword of wild magic).
The group found Brophilius in a temple dedicated to Zariel, the Archduchess of Avernus, but the statue of Zariel in the temple depicted the archdevil in her angelic form before she joined Asmodeus in the Blood War. The temple also had remains of members of the Cult of the Dragon who seemingly worshipped Tiamat.
The group killed Brophilius, and Rayphlard returned to his own timeline. For more details, visit the Cania page.
Adonides Wants Brophilius Dead
On 18 Mirtul, Conor McGregor received a message from Adonides, Duke of Cania and the source of Conor's infernal powers. Conor had recently communicated to Edmond Wulfrun through the Wulfrun Longsword.
In his message to Conor, Adonides said:
"I heard that little chat you had with our mutual friend, the elder Wulfrun. I would certainly be OK with you ending Edmond’s vacation back in your world, but he is serving a specific purpose for me at the moment.
"That brute Brophilius, though… he doesn’t deserve another second out of my control. I would certainly appreciate it if you violently sent him back to me in Cania, where he belongs. He’s due for a demotion… and some consequences.
"But remember Conor, Edmond belongs to me. He did before, and he will again. I would absolutely enjoy it if it’s YOU who sends him back to me, just like the first time, but… not yet, please. Have patience, young Conor. His time will come."
Message to Golden Coast College Alumni
On 24 Mirtul, Herb Stoner received a message from Elred Wynkalyn, president of Golden Coast College:
"King Brophilius orders all Golden Coast College graduates to return to Longwood. Any who don’t report will be… found and... punished... (No! Please no! NO!)"
Shortly after that distressing message, Herb also received a message from his father, Grumpy Stoner:
"Herb, don’t worry about us, we’re with Thimble in the safe spot. Brophilius, a devil, claimed to be our king. We’re OK for now though."
Hoar Commands Conor to Punish the Oathbreakers
On 30 Mirtul, Conor McGregor was visited in a dream by Hoar, god of revenge and retribution. In that dream, Hoar called upon his paladins, saying:
"Champions of vengeance, I am angry. Others who have pledged to me have broken their oaths. They have aligned with a pack of devils who rule over a town of innocents, simply to taste the flavor of tyranny. In this village of Longwood, the individual they call Brophilius claims to be king, and others of your kind have turned on you, they’ve turned on me, and now serve this devil king.
"You know what this means. Your oath of vengeance extends to evildoers of all kinds, including those whom you may have once known to be allies. Be careful. Do not get too close to the enemy. There’s a fine line between pretending to be corrupted and actually being corrupted. But, go to this village of Longwood, my executioners, and show them that they cannot hide from the power of the Doombringer."
