Campaign Recap

Conor and the Holy Symbol

On Day 21 of the campaign (3 Mirtul), after defeating the Cult of Talos at the Tower of Storms on the Brontide Cliffs, Collateral Damage searched through the tower. Conor McGregor found an amulet featuring the holy symbol of Hoar, the two-faced head. Earlier that day, Conor also recovered a set of Talassan plate armor from a blackguard they defeated while defending the Brontide Caves with Kremzik Darkchewer and the other kobolds who served the Light of Razaycrynth.

That evening, while the group was preparing to rest at the Wayside Inn, Conor studied the amulet. He used leather to cover the holy symbol of Talos that was featured on the arms of the plate armor. He then pressed and secured the amulet into the leather on one of the arms.

Hoar Appears to Conor in a Dream

On the night of Day 24 (6 Mirtul), Hoar appeared to Conor in a dream.

The dream started in complete darkness, but then you a faint light appeared in front of Conor. As he walked closer to see the source of the light, a loaded guillotine appeared.

Then, a human male form stepped out of the darkness. He wore dark colors, and an executioner’s cowl covered most of his head and face. His eyes and mouth were visible through the cowl. While flipping a coin, over and over, he walked toward Conor and began to speak.

In a voice Conor hadn't heard before but that was also strangely comforting, the executioner said "Conor, I’m glad you found my symbol at that tower on the coast. I’ve been watching you for a while now. There is much evil in the world, and I am in need of new champions of vengeance. New executioners."

He paused, and the blade of the guillotine dropped. He continued.

"You are very familiar with what evil can do." Conor suddenly flashed back to scenes from his past in Port Llast, the tragedy in his personal history. He then flashed back to the dream and the executioner continued.

"Conor, you are also very familiar with using your skills to punish evildoers." Conor again flashed back to Port Llast, this time to the moment when he found those who wronged him. The executioner continued.

"Conor, you’ve proven to have the ability to destroy evildoers. Since taking on my symbol, I’ve awarded you some abilities to aid your allies. You now have a taste of what we can do, together.

"Soon, you’ll have an opportunity to swear an oath to me, an oath of vengeance. If you choose to continue down this path, your oath of vengeance means you will be one of my holy executioners. You will use the pain from your past and you will avenge evil, by any means necessary.

"The punishments you give will always fit the crime. Violence will be punished through violence. You won’t follow the law, as written. You’ll follow the spirit of the law. You will use evil to do evil to evil. My executioners, my champions, they perform a necessary function. You are one of the few who have what it takes to go through with these deeds."

Conor then saw the figure getting taller and taller, his voice deeper and deeper. The executioner continued:

"I, Hoar, the Doombringer, the Poet of Justice, the god of revenge and retribution, will guide you down this path. You will learn that vengeance tastes the sweetest when it’s flavored with irony. Poetic justice is what I seek, and it’s what you will deliver.

"Sometimes, you will need to choose which evil to destroy now, and which evil to destroy later. You may even need to work together with someone for a time and then turn and destroy them. In the end, eventually all evildoers get what’s coming to them. And what’s coming for them, is you.

"So, continue to seek out and destroy evil. If your foes wreak havoc in your world or any other, if you know of anyone who deserves to be punished, it will be your responsibility to stop them. Show them that they cannot hide from the power of vengeance. I trust you, Conor. Together, you and I will ensure everyone gets what they deserve."

Hoar, the god standing tall before him, flipped the coin again, this time down to Conor. Conor caught it, and he saw his holy symbol, the two-faced head. Conor then woke from the dream, and he was holding a coin with Hoar’s holy symbol.
