The Slag

The Slag has the reputation of being the largest slum in the world. Though the reputation is not particularly accurate, Demir Grappo believes it to certainly be the most miserable slum. Less than two miles from the Assembly District, the Slag sits downriver and downwind from Glasstown, giving it a constant smell of smoke. The name comes from the constantly muddy streets and sidewalks covered in thick, tar-like film. Poverty has driven the population to work undesirable manual labor jobs, assemble themselves into gangs, or rely on begging. It is the location of a dazeglass parlor owned by a man named Harlen.   STORY   In his investigation of Ivory Forest Glassworks, Demir Grappo goes to Harlen's dazeglass parlor in the Slag to get access to Lechauri Pergos. A few members of an unknown Slag gang stop him, but he frightens them off with his glassdancer tattoo and throws them a piece of low-resonance godglass as he walks away.   Pari is from the Slag, a place where she insists no one make anything of themselves. Thessa Foleer dares her to become the first, giving her a job as a client of the Grappo and teaching her to read. Her life in the Slag also desensitized her to killing and abuse, which allows her to kill Temmen without remorse, though she is still shocked by the barbarity she sees between the guild-families and in Baby Montego's violence when the Dorlani agents attack the Hyacinth Hotel.
