Kahron's Cross Settlement in Earth PA | World Anvil

Kahron's Cross

The city of Kahron's Cross is located on the east side of Hellmaw Falls, the northern end point of the Hades Rift. It is a rather small, but lucrative, trade city and acts as a barrier of entry to northern trade.

Demographics

Like many settlements in the north, Kahron's Cross hosts a large dwarf population along with the humans.

Government

The laws of Kahron's Cross are strict in comparison to most cities in The Free West. Slavery is illegal here, which makes it difficult for southerners to trade in flesh further north. They also have laws against wielding weapons in the city. Aside from that, though, most of the laws are relatively similar to the rest of the West.

Defences

A small standing army of a couple hundred soldiers reside in the city, armed to the teeth, with a half dozen watchtowers spread out from the city equipped with complex signaling lights.

Industry & Trade

As a pivotal trading post, Kahron's Cross has little in the way of actual exports. The city makes most of its income from heavily taxing the merchants that pass through. It is difficult to tax in currency, as the West is made up of a dozen or so different currencies, so they instead tax by taking a portion of the goods being sold. This method fills the city with a variety of goods from all over, making it a very unique trading post. There is also, of course, the selling of Soul Metal that provides the city with a large portion of its revenue. Rent here is very high, as the city resides in the largest province in the nation, and also from its  oddly desirable location next to the Hellmaw.

Infrastructure

Massive watermills in the falls provide most of the power to the city, and the sewer system leads to a conveniently endless hole known as the Hellmaw.

Tourism

The city's unique location offers a rare view of Hellmaw Falls from the safety of civilization. There are several overlooks on the various layers of the city that provide an even closer vantage point. This is also a popular suicide location. Nobody has ever seen the base of the falls, but it is popularly believed that it is the sole source of water in hell.

Architecture

Much of the city is carved into the side of the falls itself, but the buildings on the surface resemble medieval cottages with stone walls and thatch roofs.

Natural Resources

One common, but also commonly overlooked, natural resource near the city is that of the soul metal that can be found in the cliffside of the Hellmaw. While incredibly dangerous to obtain, a large chunk of the city's revenue come from the selling of soul metal.
