Sand Worm Wastes

Geography

On the surface, the Sand Worm Wastes appear much like the rest of the desert: rolling sand dunes, choppy roads, and a smattering of ruined buildings slowly being swallowed by the sands. However, beneath the surface is an entirely different story: there is a massive, interconnected web of tunnels down there. Ranging in size from that of a rabbit hole to that of a military-grade airplane hangar, these tunnels are a sight to behold. You know, if only they weren't filled to the brim with Sand Worms. The walls of these tunnels are smooth, iridescent marvels that give off a faint glow. This is, of course, due to the slime that sloughs off the worms as they burrow in the ground.

Fauna & Flora

There is no longer any plantlife in or around the wastes, and any creatures stupid enough to brave the land are usually devoured rather quickly by the worm inhabitants.

History

The Apocalypse
really tore the world apart. Even with all the demonic and celestial portals opening up everywhere and the various alien races wreaking their own special havoc, few events were as devastating as the plague that wiped out most of the plantlife in the western United States. Famines killed more people than any warring army. After that, it was easy for the enemy armies to plow American cities into dust. It is unclear when the worms were released, but when they were, they devoured everything in their path: be it living or nonliving material. However, they didn't go very far. They stayed in the area for the next two and a half centuries, eating everything that came into their path and hibernating until more came.

Tourism

Sport hunters are the only tourists to the wastes. The larger the sand worm specimen you can tackle, the higher the esteem. There are even certain cities, like Vinesta, that will provide a bounty for bringing back the corpses of these creatures. The more people die out here, the more adventurous souls the place attracts.
