Year 479: Knighthood

General Summary

For the following session, see Year 480: A Falling Star.
"Receive now your spurs, your right to suitable arms, and take this - my sword - to your side, to serve and defend me well. Arise, Sir Knights." - Earl Roderick of Salisbury
In Logres, in the summer of 479, three squires practice spear training and horsemanship under the marshal Sir Elad of Vagon at Castle Vagon in Salisbury.   The squires are Amlyn of Appleton Thorn, a charming romantic from the Cambrian duchy of Cheshire trying to regain his ancestral home; Artaire of Lighthorne, a determined adventurer from the Logrian county of Wuerensis trying to find his missing sister; and Gwyn of Fishlake, a gallant Cumbrian noble from the kingdom of Maris trying to live up to his father's name.   After training, Sir Elad informs the trio of reports of a man-eating bear terrorizing the village of Imber and asks them to investigate. Following a quick joust to determine Amlyn as the hunt leader, they rest for the day and set out west the following morning on their eight-hour ride to Imber.   In Imber, a peasant woman directs the three to the elderly local British Christian priest, Old Garr. After a short sermon and breakfast with Garr and his mistress, Garr agrees to accompany the group as a field medic to the nearby Blakemoor Wood, where the large bear has been spotted.   During the hunt, the three find a strange mystical creature and Artaire frightens it away, before Gwyn saves Artaire from being trampled by a riding knight. Gwyn recognizes him as King Pellinore de Galis, one of the kings of Cambria, and King Pellinore explains that he has devoted his life to hunting the legendary beast Glatisant. He rides off in pursuit of the creature.   Later in the hunt, Artaire gets lost in the woods while Gwyn is able to track the bear. Gwyn injures the large animal and Amlyn finishes it off, and the two head back to Imber with Garr and Artaire. On the outskirts of the city, the group spots bandits harrassing a farmer. Artaire maims a bandit and takes him prisoner, causing the other two to flee. The townsfolk celebrate the party, and provide them with a cleaned bear pelt and bear meat.   The following morning, Amlyn, Artaire and Gwyn part ways with Garr and return to Vagon, where Sir Elad tells them to take the bandit to Earl Roderick of Salisbury at his castle in the capital city of Sarum. Upon arriving at Sarum Castle, the three deliver their bounty and mingle with the ladies at court. Artaire attempts to unsuccessfully flirt with Lady Adwen, the daughter of Amlyn's former knight Sir Bles, before trying his failing luck with the terse widow Lady Indeg. Amlyn flirts with Lady Elaine, a young noblewoman with a local reputation for infidelity, and asks her on a date.   Calling court into session, Earl Roderick is impressed with the combat prowess of the three squires. Upon the recommendation of Sir Elad and their knights Sir Jarren, Sir Amig, and Sir Hywel, Earl Roderick decides to knight the three. Traditionally, the squires are to spend the night in prayer - however, the castle's priest Father Tewi encourages them to go out and celebrate instead.   At the local tavern in Sarum, the Pictish barkeep Illy flirts with Gwyn while Amlyn and Lady Elaine share their drink. When they notice Illy being beaten by racist young knights for being a Pict, Artaire and Gwyn step in and brawl with the drunken knights, with Artaire knocking one unconscious. Illy thanks Gwyn for saving her.   The following day, Earl Roderick knights the trio and grants them holdings in Salisbury, alongside Sir Amlyn's former knight Sir Jarren, who is granted Burcombe. Sir Amlyn becomes the lord of Winterbourne Stoke, Sir Artaire becomes the lord of Idmiston, and Sir Gwyn becomes the lord of Shrewton. After the ceremony, the new knights leap onto their horses and ride off into the sunset.   Months later, in winter, Sir Amlyn and Lady Elaine get married.
