Mahisy
Mahisy is a small city on the northern coast of Sladovia. It has been under the rule of Sladovia for almost as long as the country has existed. Mahisy was designated as a ship building city due to how close to an the ocean it resides. It also is in charge of overseas trading, coordinating with cities like Domhain's Reach and Station City. A recent fire burnt down most of the aging city, causing Sladovia to heavily invest into its reconstruction. This makes Mahisy the most modern city in Sladovia. While being the most modernized, it is also the most isolated. No rail systems connect to the city causing it to have to ship in materials from cities that are connected.
Demographics
The citizens are made up of specifically Humans, Halflings, and Dwarfs. Merchants who reside in Mahisy hold the most wealth, with the Baron coming in second, and the rest of the population afterwards.
Government
The baron acts as the law and tax creating entity of the town, and ensures that the cities run smoothly Some laws include mandatory working hours and wealth taxes. The baron also acts as the judge for any legal proceedings in the city.
Defences
The city is rather defenseless with no protecting wall and no standing militia. The Sladovian navy is the only defense the city has against foreign threats. The geography surrounding the city is enough to deter invading armies.
Industry & Trade
Mahisy acts as the shipbuilding and maintaining capitol of the world. Ships from any country are allowed to dock and receive repairs. Trading ships made in Mahisy are sought after for their efficiency and relative cheap price tag. Trading is the next largest industry the city has. Mahisy needs supplies to build and repair ships, to do that it imports everything by sea. Refined metals from Chitina, tools from Drangholt, and weapons from Kivertrov are all needed to complete national and international orders. The city also has large fishing and whaling markets that are used to supplement the diet of its citizens. Whale oil is also used to oil the machinery in the city.
Infrastructure
Mahisy being isolated from the rest of the country produced a unique problem. Coal needed for the power plants could not be imported regularly enough for the city to have electrical power consistently. A solution was drawn up by local engineers to use the geothermal vents on the bottom of the icy sea floor. Special turbines were fitted to the vents, which provided more than enough power for the whole city. Large docks with raising platforms allow for ships to be lifted out of the sea during maintenance.
Assets
Mahisy holds all Sladovian ships when they are due for maintenance. A warehouse holds all the food stores for the city.
Guilds and Factions
The local baron tries to keep the city running smoothly by keeping merchants and workers happy, while keeping the standards set by the Sladovian government. The Merchants hall attempts to have trade taxes lifted, and trading opened up to the ports of the FIC. The Ship Builders union wants better pay and healthcare for the workers.
History
Mahisy was founded in 726 by a group of stranded Halflings. They created a small ice fishing village and managed to not only survive, but grow into a sizable town. When Sladovian forces found their way to the isolated village, they did not give any fight, instead deciding to join them. The townspeople of Mahisy were good at building ships that could break through the ice, so they offered to build ships for Sladovia to prove their worth. The city has been building ships ever since and perfecting their craft. When the Sladovian national rail system was being built, the moving ice sheets proved to difficult to build on, so the city remained isolated. The isolation was seen as a benefit to Mahisians as they could bend the rules of the country without the Council of Three having knowledge. This would include selling ships to FIC territories for example. In the year of 1622 a fire started by an explosion set fire to the whole town, burning almost all of the buildings down. With the town not able to produce ships, the Sladovian government stepped in to rebuild the city, creating the most modern city in the country.
Tourism
Visitors to the city often come for the sport of ice fishing. The isolated location and miles of ice sheets lend to many who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Architecture
The buildings are made of adamantite and brick. Streets are lain in hollowed stone, heated with water from the geothermal vents.
Geography
The are surrounding Mahisy is notoriously harsh. The city itself sits on the only solid ground surrounded by ice sheets and ocean. The ice sheets move throughout the summer months which keeps a rail system from being built to Mahisy. To the south, mountains block the keep the city isolated further, as the only way to get to it feasibly is by sea or air.
Natural Resources
The city has easy access to the ocean which allows the city to thrive with trading.
