Walenstal

Walenstal is an ancient city that has demolished and rebuilt countless times. Founded in 709 Walenstal was a Human controlled city located in the middle of the great swamp. The city only grew popular with both Halflings and Dwarfs due the extraordinary wildlife and the resource rich mountains surrounding it. Currently Walenstal is the largest mining town in the FIC, as it supplies the whole nation with coal, iron, gold, silver, precious stones, and other resources that can be found in the ground. Walenstal was the first city to adapt to electricity as a power source, with Fagen Rail Co supplying the energy. The city is known for its distinct architecture, and its capitol building suspended hundreds of feet in the air by four arching columns.

Demographics

Dwarfs are the largest part of the population, with Humans and Halflings coming up as second and third respectively. Magical creatures are allowed to enter, but cannot reside in the city. Most of the wealth is held by the Haren family, who owns most of the mines the town is known for. Other than that the miners live a humble life, along with craftsmen and merchants.

Government

The government is run by an elected council of representatives. These representatives will elect a governor to lead them, create laws to better the city, and act as jury for grand court cases. The governor will guide the representatives in the law making process, make the final call on a bill before it becomes law, and act as judge in a grand court.

Defences

Walenstal is notoriously hard to get to other than the national rail system. The bog acts as a natural defense to marching armies, slowing them down. The city itself has low walls, and cannon turrets. A volunteer militia of trained guerilla fighters act as the cities standing army. The city owns a few airships to form a small air force.

Industry & Trade

The cities backbone is in the mines. Miners dig up all kinds of ores and precious stones that get refined in the city. Some of the materials are used for tools and construction materials. Then using the national rail system the refined materials and tools would be sold to the other cites in the nation. Excess tools are sent to Pallivos to be sent to Domhain's Reach. Jewelry smiths use the precious stones and gold to create world renowned pieces. Most jewelry was sent through the rail system to the other cities. If there's any that don't sell are taken to Station City to be auctioned off to any who will buy. The largest import is food, as Walenstal is too large to survive off of hunting and gathering alone.

Infrastructure

The whole city sits on giant stilts, keeping it about thirty feet off the ground, in case of flooding. The "flooring" is made of steel and is topped with stone to act as a road and foundations for the buildings above. Throughout the city, a trolley system will take anyone just about anywhere. Streetlights use natural gas, as the city is near a large deposit of it. Many forges litter the town, as new tools, and repairs are needed near constantly to keep the miners at work. Sewage is pumped underground to a treatment facility buried under the bog. Many drilling sights in the mountainsides allow for easy access to the raw materials for the miners.

Assets

Walenstal has thousands upon thousands of tools and simple weapons, and raw and refined metals are stored in warehouses throughout the city.

Guilds and Factions

Walenstal has many guilds, which all have representation in the government. The miners guild fights for better wages and work conditions off for the miners that the wealth of the city comes from. The Smithies guild works to recruit new workers and refine skills of veteran smiths. The Jewelers Guild works to get the best jewelers names out into the pubic.

History

Walenstal is the oldest existing city in the world. It was founded by a tribe of humans who called the swamps their home. The tribe grew slowly over hundreds of year, becoming the largest human settlement in the world at the time. This caught the attention of the God of Wit who tasked the settlement to steal a hunk of precious adamantite. This act lead to a war between Walenstal and the Dwarven tribe. Walenstal joined the FIC in 1244. The invention of electricity reinvented the city, the mines, and tourism for the better.

Tourism

When people visit Walenstal, they go to see the arches that hold the capital building suspended in the air. Markets surround the bases of the arches to trap tourists into buying second rate goods.

Architecture

Walenstal uses stone an wood almost exclusively to construct buildings. The Stilts that the city sits on are made of stone, with a metal platform holding stone roads, foundations, and buildings. The grand arches are made of Walenstal steel, with the capital building being made up of marble, with a gold dome on top.

Geography

Walenstal is in the middle of a dense swamp, with mountains surrounding that. The city is practically in a bubble.

Natural Resources

Walenstal has an abundance of lumber from the swamps, and raw materials from the mines in the mountains. Natural gas is extracted throughout the bog with pockets of it floating to the surface from deep underground.
