Maitiu II Beth - 25th Known Ruler of Revellia

Rey Maitiu II Beth

Reign: 22 NA - 30 NA
High Magi: Lord Carnas Odon
Mox Master: Sir Taladan Slabh   Like his namesake, Maitiu the Second would live in the shadow of those that preceded him. His father, Barthos the Bastard, was a legendary warrior who ended monarchy in the Peninsula, and his own brother Garland had been meant to take the throne. His sisters, the twin princesses Bellis and Naarsia, were rebellious and extraordinary figures who would draw gossip and cause scandals both before and after the death of young Garland.   King Barthos died a mere year after young Garland, mysteriously murdered in his bed. Maitiu was seven at the time, and was taken under the guidance of his father's High Magus, Lord Carnas Odon. He was a studious and attentive boy, but he was a small child and never robust. He practiced swordplay in the yards every day, but tired quickly and ofttimes pushed himself unto collapse.   Maitiu was fond of his sisters and would come to rely strongly on their counsel as he matured. Bellis was a speller, Naarsia a magician, and through them he learned much of both Clan Beth and the Ainros kings that came before. He came to admire his own namesake, Maitiu Ainros, whom legend recorded as a cunning and wise ruler, who worked closely and successfully with his wizard, Anna Chains. Maitiu would prevail upon his sisters to fulfill this role for him, which they would largely do. Princess Bellis would eventually become first speller under Lord Carnas the High Magus, though she would be demoted under unclear circumstance, and shortly after departed for Cantef in Ethel. Princess Naarsia would remain by his side for all of his reign, however. She wed the influential Lord Halrik Dylaen, preventing an expected coup by the powerful clan, and would eventually become an adequate speller in her own right.   Maitiu was wed to Lady Drusellia Sinachar in 22 NA shortly after his coronation. The Liddinawth blood still ran strong in Clan Sinachar, and both Lord Carnas Odon and Lord Halrik Dylaen (the Lord Treasurer), and even the famously contrary Lord Adram Capall, the Warchief, knew that their connection to the legendary Viisianars through the Liddinawths helped to legitimize Beth's rule. Lady Drusellia was called an extraordinary beauty, with deep earthen complexion and hair that was both onyx and ruby at once, and eyes of pure gold. She and King Maitiu would have five children: Princess Dorrena, Prince Greeyan, Prince Bethraal, Princess Lianna, and Princess Maiden.   The five children were all earthen-skinned and beautiful (save Maiden, who would cruelly be called Milkmaid by petty gossips, likening her to an old Deinain goddess with cow-horns), yet their complexions were notably closer to their father's than their mother's. Many both noble and common began to note how quickly the divine blood of Liddinawth seemed to be expelled by scions of Clan Beth, whilst the kings of Clan Ainros were known to retain the look for several generations.   Maitiu the Second managed to emulate his namesake in many ways, yet in the end he seemed more to mimic the man's son, Redham. Like that unfortunate king, Maitiu felt the need to disprove the gossips that called him weak. Maitiu would hold grand, northern-style tourneys with jousts and mock-battles. He himself would participate in these, with mixed results, and his few victories were oft said to be somehow prearranged.   He even brought in Urudunite dancers, perhaps hoping to recreate the foreign splendor of Garland the Conqueror and his son. Pollen the Proud records that "Maitiu failed to learn the lesson offered by Sir William Glast in the age of Dorreon the Magnificent." A group of twelve magicians played as the dancers moved about, causing hysteria and panic throughout the city. It would later be said that half of Revelback burned whilst Maitiu danced.   This need to display his vigor and splendor would ultimately be his end. The Century Wars were growing calmer now and scarcely affected Revellia, but when Yvruel managed to foment another uprising in the Rathlands of Ethel, Maitiu seized this chance to prove himself a warrior. There, he would be thrown from his horse in the uneven wetlands. Some reports say he was struck by the arrow of a Rathi bandit, while others say he died of a burst heart as he fell from his horse.   More than anything, Maitiu's reign helped to secure the High Magus' supremacy over the Chief Justicar, which had previously served for centuries as a king's second. Lord Carnas Odon would rule the realm during Maitiu's minority, as well as the minority of Prince Greeyan and Prince Bethraal. Warchief Adram Capall and Chief Justicar Sir Taladan Slabh controlled the army, but it was Odon who controlled the information that was received, and thus Odon who would reshape the future of Revellia.
