Carnas Odon

A Celebrated High Magus Under Four Revellian Reynars

Lord Carnas Odon

Lord Carnas Odon served as High Magus under Barthos the Bastard, Maitiu the Second, Prince Greeyan, and Bethraal the First. He is largely credited with the governance of Revellia, running the state while Barthos battled, Maitiu boasted, and Bethraal slept. Prince Greeyan died in childhood, and can hardly be blamed for leaving the realm in Carnas' hands.   Lord Carnas represents the apex of Clan Odon's power in the modern age. They were considered great kings in ancientry, ruling over what is now the Boarswood and possibly all of the Cape of Monsters until being conquered by Baarach of Beth. This symmetry has been noted and appreciated many times, that an Odon should rule the canton over the heads of four impotent Beths.   Other than Clan Capall, the perpetual foes of Clan Odon, Lord Carnas was overwhelmingly popular and effective. He was first installed at the incredibly young age of five-and-twenty, just after the death of Lord Mattamor Capall, who had served during most of Barthos II's reign. Barthos would spend his last two years at war, and Lord Carnas would spend that time unifying taxations and quelling a small peasant uprising. It is widely agreed that he was put in place by Princess Kirin Luutar, who played a pivotal role in securing Barthos's crown and had served as Regent during his minority. Clan Odon had been loyal to Princess Kirin under the Four Crowns almost from the start, and replacing Mattamor Capall with Lord Carnas represented a coup for the Odons in their never ending conflict with the Capalls. Some gossips would even claim that the comely young Carnas had seduced the aged Princess Kirin in order to win the position. Princess Kirin lost her husband during the Four Crowns and never remarried, though it should be added that she was fiercely independent throughout her life, and few would have thought her to be easily seduced.
Carnas as High Magus by DALL-E
However he attained his position, Lord Carnas served well, and proved to be an invaluable source of security that ultimately saved Clan Beth from destruction. Barthos II had been a bastard, and after his death at the River Roan, the throne was ripe for seizure. Barthos' son was still a boy, and not a robust one, yet Lord Carnas' strong and steady hand kept the canton united under a series of weak kings. Many have noted the turmoil of the Third and Fourth Brothers Rebellions that took root shortly after Lord Carnas died of his years, and the tragedy that another strong Magus was not to hand.   The last king served by Lord Carnas was Bethraal the First, and many have noted that the second of the king's twin sons was named Carn, to honor the High Magus. Carn was widely derided as a usurper in modern times, yet in his day he was celebrated and seen by many as valiant.   The High Magus died late in his sixty-ninth year of life. It was remarkable to see a man of such age, still vital and effective, even as the king he served would dodder and tremble, despite having less than half Lord Carnas' years. Yet in the end Verissian summons us all, and Lord Carnas went peacefully in his sleep.
