Barthos II Beth - 24th Known Ruler of Revellia

Called Barthos the Green and Barthos the Bastard

Rey Barthos II Beth

Reign: 997 RA - 11 NA
High Magi: Brother Aaran Dylaen, Lord Mattamor Capall, Lord Carnas Odon
Mox Masters: Sir Connon Dorn   Barthos was conceived by Dorreon II during his great progress, with a miller's daughter in Sure Town, a little east of Saolmoth. His mother, Tulip, was cast out by her father and took him with her to Saolmoth, where she tried to take shelter in the hostel there. They demanded she give up her baby to them, so she instead found work in a tavern on the western side of the city, where Barthos would spend his infancy.   Of course, he was not called Barthos in those days. His name was Bark, and his mother oft called him Splinter for how he would inconvenience her. She would also tell the boy he was the son of a prince, and someday that prince would return and claim him.   Tulip was slain by a drunkard when young Bark was three. He was taken in by another barmaid, named Hessa, who had a girl of her own about the same age. It would be less than a year, however, before Hessa was visited by a man in fine clothing who purchased young Bark from her, promising he would be well looked after. That stranger was Brother Aaran Dylaen, High Magus of Revellia, and it would seem he kept his promise.   Barthos was but a child during the Four Crowns, which would eventually see him established as the acknowledged heir to the throne. Yet even then, when all other contenders had been dealt with, his legitimacy remained in question. 'Barthos the Bastard' was his title even as a child, and it would take a true pretender to the throne to establish him as the rightful monarch.   Bennerok the Beast attacked from the north in 995 RA with a band of Rathi outlaws from Ethel. Claiming to be the abandoned son of Dorreon the Second and Lady Magaana Sirtal, Bennerok was a hulking brute who fought with a fearsome war ax. He and King Barthos would end the conflict in single combat, wherein Barthos took a serious wound but managed to slay Bennerok on a field of honor. He was scarcely sixteen, and his legacy was henceforth secured.   In his twentieth year, King Barthos was wed to Lian Faolan, his second cousin and granddaughter to Prince Harek Beth, in order to help reunite the Clan Beth. They would bear four children: Garland, who died of wyrmrot in his youth; Bellis, who became first speller under High Magus Carnas Odon; her twin sister Naarsia, who had a more rebellious spirit, and Maitiu, who would be king.   As king, Barthos would honor the wishes of the father he never met by finally leading Revellia into the Century Wars. He attended and signed his name to the Grand Geas at the Great Conclave, abolishing monarchy in the Southern Cantons (and later, the Northern).   Despite the moment of the Great Conclave, the Century Wars would continue, with Barthos fighting and winning several battles in support of his northern allies. He would die relatively young, at two-and-thirty, though surprisingly not in battle. Barthos was found murdered in his bed in the Spring of 11 NA. Blame would eventually be placed with one of his pages, Edward Paddox, who was brutally executed. Many felt this explanation was not satisfactory, however, and most consider Barthos' death a mystery to this day.
