Reynar Rank/Title in Ardre | World Anvil

Reynar

A ceremonial title for the High Lord of Revellia, in the Milosian Peninsula. Though oft still called king to his people, "Reynar" is the official term, both in governance and in religious concerns.   The term comes from old Brevessarian for "leader."   In many ways, a Reynar functions almost identically to a King. Critically, the Reynar is considered the owner of all land within Revellia, in a legal sense rather than divine or governmental, and is understood to be leasing out various parts of his property to his vassal lords (also called tenant lords). Some of those lords, the heads of the chief clans, are then permitted to lease out some of this land further, to lesser lords and landholding knights. The Grand Geas details the rights of landowners in such a way, however, that the Reynar essentially has all the rights of most kings. In fact, this redefining of power in Revellia technically circumvents many of the restrictions that were placed on kingship by the the First and Second Concords under Gwynt the Ghastly.   To date, every Revellian Reynar has been a member of Clan Beth.
