They claim descent from Crulos the Horned God, and supposedly wore the antlers of adolescent elk as they did battle with the Glastins of the Blue Forest. Other legends claim the Elkwoods rode the elk of the Blue Forest before horses came to Milos, making them a dominant military force before time began. The elk of the Blue Forest are long gone now, and the Elkwoods have held Berleigh for time immemorial. They have always been a highly honored clan, frequently serving as the first defense against invasions from northern clans and more recently the Khabarese Crusade. The Elkwoods are considered proud, stubborn, honorable, yet grim and humorless. They are not charmers or politicians, which is why no Elkwood has reigned as king in modern history.
