Noble District
The final district in Golgatha is the Noble District. Lavish gold-plated pillars decorate this district. Beautiful trees and lakes bring a serene peace upon the district. Many villas here are built from alabaster salvaged from the Halls beneath Golgatha. The manors of all four Great Houses of Carandor are here (Vanderbilt, Médici, Borgia, and D'Este). Many other more prosperous noble families make their home here, and their towers and manors populate the district. Noble houses constantly rise and fall, and there are those who take advantage of that fact. For example, a mercenary company called the Wartower Wardens lives in the remnants of an old noble house.
Who is or isn’t a noble is a matter of some debate. Tradition and procedure dictate that only the Doge can grant the title of nobility, but some of the wealthiest denizens of the Noble District lack titles, and yet demand to be treated as such. Anyone dealing with a self-proclaimed noble is sure to weigh the value of their wealth before besmirching their name.
Emergency Rulers
The district hosts the Noble College, a form of proto-parliament, where the nobles congregate to elect a new Doge. In times of crisis, should there be no Doge, the College rules. Its rule has proven disastrous in the past; no more than 40 years ago, the Doge of the time died in office, and the Noble College took a decade to elect a new one. This somewhat recent event caused a costly time of strife that led to many pointless deaths and loss of profits.
