Docks District

Most visitors to Golgatha arrive by sea, and thus the first place they see is the Docks District. Countless ships both foreign and domestic rest at its mighty harbor, bringing the fruits of agriculture and labor from distant places. The shore is an imposing place with guard towers, suddenly surrounded by surprisingly poor neighborhoods. Crime is common. Though there are some warehouses in the Docks District, nobles who run most of the shipping usually want to immediately take their gains out of the reach of the poor, preferring to bring them to the Merchant or Noble Districts. In doing so, they have to pass through the poor areas of the docks to get there, and the district thus supports a thriving, stealing underworld. Some even mysteriously whisper the words the Dark Crescent in connection with Golgatha’s underworld, with no clue accompanying that of which they speak.

History of Conflict

Centuries ago when Golgatha was built, the Docks district used to be hundreds of feet higher in altitude, at the same level as the rest of the craggy rocks that make up most of Golgatha’s shoreline. However, somewhere during the Magewar a crystal called The Untouchable was dropped on the ground by an unknown member of the Nine. Despite being relatively small in size it’s impossibly heavy, so heavy that no-one has been able to lift it since. The crystal exerts a magical aura which has slowly, over the centuries, inexplicably lowered the level of the surrounding terrain. This had led to the existence of the unique Docks district in what would otherwise be mountainous terrain. However, the Docks District is now exactly at sea level. If it sinks any more, all of it could be flooded resulting in the homes of thousands of people being destroyed. Following the end of the war, the weighted stone served as a strongman spectacle. All manner of life has tried to lift it, so often that it’s hazardous aura began leaving permanent impairments on those too frequently attempting to budge it. At present, it remains unimpeded, carrying on with its oppressive, crushing aura. Everyone in the Docks District does their best to forget its impending devastation, remarking it as a problem for another day.

Most of those living in the Docks district work on unloading or off-loading ships, stealing their cargo, or selling services to the many ships and sailors that arrive here from every where in the world. It’s a poorly-maintained district due to the Untouchable, no-one has been willing to invest in repairing buildings for decades let alone build new ones, expecting that one day soon the entire place will be at the bottom of the sea. This makes the Docks District a noticeably low class, run-down area.
