Doge's District
This place is akin to a royal district. It’s inhabited by the Doge and his family, the Doge’s elite guard, known as the Obsidian Brigade, and an army of servants who see to his every whim. The Obsidian Brigade are based at the Citadel of Sorrows which contrasts heavily with the beautiful Doge’s palace. All visitors to the Doge’s palace must pass next to the Citadel of Sorrows, an ever-present reminder of what will happen if you displease the Doge. The Citadel of Sorrows is called such because it’s the only prison of Golgatha, since most crimes are punished with either fines or exile into the Halls of Alabaster. The lack of many prisons in Golgatha saves the country a lot of money, as crime is common. Should you somehow end up in prison, the Citadel of Sorrows is where you’ll reside.
Lap of Luxury
The Doge’s palace, the Dogal gardens, a sculpture park, and a personal lake are just some of the features here, and they’re all closed to the public. The only ones who get to admire them, aside from those close to the Doge, are the invitees to a noble gala. In particular, every year the victors of the Legendary Parties Cup are hosted at the Doge’s Palace for a celebratory ball.
Suspicions of Corruption
As of 1349 AN (After Naldirath) Serene Doge Marco Cornaro rules from the Doge’s District. Though things seem all-right on the surface, his legitimacy is questionable. Under his rule, Carandor’s might has continued to erode due to the unsolved issue of the Halls, and his forces are now unable to guarantee the security of all his hands. Cornaro’s administration seems unable to provide an answer. Nobles select the Doge from among their own, consulting no one but themselves. Dogal administrations aren’t known for their efficiency, and Cornaro’s is just another example of the trend of ever-more ineffectual rulers so that nobles won’t be impeded in their efforts to cash in with trade and Mercantilism licenses.
