After discussion on the Server the issue was identified we will have to add other types of parental relationships.
This is now accepted, but we have to discuss which those relationships will beTraditional family structures are the hallmark of most societies, including in fantasy / non-fiction settings. However, as many have stated, some races or species have different cultural norms while many fantasy stories include children born out of extenuating circumstances. Enabling flexibility is a wonderful thing, although the default setting should still remain within the more traditional construct.
Expanded relationships would be so helpful. they are immensely common in the real world and it only makes sense to be able to include those in our worlds.
I would like to see family relationships expanded in general - adopted parents, guardians, surrogates, etc.
very much agreed! the sort of things you cant do right now include asexual/agemetic reproduction that still includes raising children, polycules or siblings raising children, etc. it's kinda a narrow structure for parentage or parental relationships
Half my fantasy races don't bother with a marital construct...
Another one of these no-brainers which should've been there since the beginning.
Yes! I don't even get why this isn't a feature already. Plenty of fantasy world have royal families and even in the RL there are more than marital relationships, one example being concubines. There is also the 'bastard' child trope that is very common and the whole point is that their parents were nor married. It just make sense to have this feature, even if its just the option between marital and non-marital. (Personally I would want something that could allow for custom so the creator can name what kind of relationship it is, for example: concubines, consorts, mistresses, one-night stand, etc.)
I have cultures imagined which embrace many forms of unconventional relationship structures, which would look very strange on a traditional tree!
The idea is a good one. Having flexibility in relationships would make dealing with the relationships a lot easier.
I love this idea! I write paranormal and sci-fi and have several characters created by or born to gods/goddesses and have no conventional parents.
While I do actually agree with the default being married couples because, in most of recorded Eurasian history, most kids were born to married couples. That said, it was certainly not always true in all places and times. So it would be good to make it easier to change this on a per-case basis or even be able to change the default entirely for a particular world.
Other things to consider: group marriages where the father may be any of several known; species where there are more than two parents; biological and adoptive parents.
To me this seems like an absolute no brainer in regards to family tree functionality.
Honestly, the fact that it instantly lists the parents as married is weird to say the least (what do you have against non-married parents, WorldAnvil?)
I love this! I have some characters who are bonded via curses, and most of the others have "found families" who are not related by blood.
