Calder Seawolf
Lord Calder Seawolf (a.k.a. Cal)
Calder is the patriarch of the Seawolf family and Lord of Wolfhold. He is valued by the Emphir for his expertise in trading and shipping, and he runs a trading and shipping enterprise largely from Wolfhold. Ever since the death of his second wife and lover, he has been mostly known as a hard and reclusive man.

Calder was his father's only son, and so always destined to be the Seawolf heir, though he had several cousins. He was educated at home by a governess and then tutors, as was the Seawolf tradition, and then sent away to college, where he met Fhaora Darkwood and Darhana Arroway. He fell in love with Fhaora, but was unable to act on it because he was already arranged to be married to Cainys Shieldhart. Instead, the three became fast friends and stayed in contact even after leaving school.
Calder returned home to take up his responsibilities as the Seawolf heir, marrying Cainys who bore him his first son, Roarke. However, Cainys never really recovered from childbirth and was unwell. When she got pregnant a second time when Roarke was about two, she miscarried and died.
Calder was still in contact with his friends Fhaora and Darhana. He could not marry Fhaora - she was a magic-user of non-Eschien heritage and his father would never approve, and he was afraid the Emphir would not either and the family would fall out of favor. Fhaora was also not interested in the pitfalls of an Eschen marriage and being irrevocably tied to any man, though she returned Calder's affections. Instead, it was decided that Calder would marry Darhana, whose family was still looking for a suitable match for her, but they all knew Fhaora and Darhana were a matched set, and the Lady Darkwood also was brought into the household.
It was idyllic for all, with both women chipping in to raise Roarke and then the addition of Fhaora and Calder's son Luthien, followed by Darhana and Calder's son Keenan the year after and then their daughter Daire shortly after that. Everything was wonderful for House Seawolf until the ladies died tragically in a riding accident when Luthien was 6. Losing his best friend and his lover turned Calder into a hard, withdrawn man neither Lady would have recognized.
Calder married Thana Swiftwind for political advantage and to try for more heirs as soon as it was socially acceptable, at the urging of Thana's father. He has little interest in his third wife, who is barely a year older than Roarke. She has borne him two more children, first daughter Sorcha and most recently son Tierney. After bearing him a son, his third heir as Luthien is not in the line of succession, he has been happy to leave her alone to run his household.

The Seawolf family has made a name for itself running the majority of the Imperial shipping as well as a profitable shipping enterprise of their own. Calder is the head of this enterprise.
Mental Trauma
Losing his first wife Cainys, who was his friend if not his lover, and then his lover and best friend in his second wife and lover, was too much for Calder and changed him completely.

Before losing so much, Calder was bright and had a sharp tongue, but one he used gently to poke fun at those who generally knew he was kidding. He was a doting father and a loving partner. He was interested in expansion of the family business and modernization, as well as the good of all.
After his loses, Calder has become a hard man whose expectations are heavy and unyielding and whose sharp tongue is frequently exercised on everyone around him, regardless of how it might hurt them.
