Narr
Narr is a polity of Vildrel situated east of Estaria, south of The Enclave of the Free Peoples, and north of The Forgelands. Because the Forgelands is not an official polity and doesn't engage in diplomacy, most maps mark the Forgelands as part of Narr's territory, though it has no control the Dredges that live there.
People and Culture
The cultural practices of the people of Narr varies by region and ethnicity. This divide is prominently seen between the Lorvi humans of the north, the Zeeci humans of the south, and the Estarian "frontiersman" colonists.Lorvi
The dominant ethnic group of Narr's densely populated north is the Lorvi people, a culture that dates back before the current era. These humans are adapted to life in the marshy environment surrounding their capital city of Alnuk with tightly fitting, finely woven clothes that absorb less water and prevent pests from touching their skin. Upper layers of their bodies are layered in thin jackets, often as many layers as possible. The Lorvi have a distinctive fashion trend of bulking and layering their shoulders as much as possible in these middle layers of jackets, giving them a distinctive silhouette. The Lorvi are Penants, with religious traditions dating back far older than the Church of Penance. Alnuk is thought to be the starting place for that denomination of Atovism.Zeeci
The Zeeci are a confederated tribe of humans and droven mainly living in the desert region of Narr and T'Ched, extending all the way to the border of the Forgelands. They dress in loose layered, brightly colored silks and linen with subtle variations in fashion by region. The Zeeci are an Eclectic Materialist society.Frontiersman (Auklan)
Frontiersman, also called Desert Men, Steady Men, or Dusters are Auklan colonists living in the Gnashi Desert from lands west of Narr. These colonists make their lives in Narr to extract recourses from the mineral rich desert mountains and the considerably more dangerous Forgelands. Frontiersman adopt a self-sufficient and boisterous spirit. They dress in lightly colored linens, wide brimmed hats, dusters and boots.Ethnic Tension
The Zeeci (Zee-see), the dominant human ethnic group of the southern deserts and mountains of Narr, are historically hostile to the Lorvi (Lore-Vee), the dominant ethnic group of the northern plains and swamps. The two groups have a history of territorial wars dating back further than the current era. As such, the Lor'Kecht Advoch's control of Zeeci territory is tenuous at best, and the region is in constant civil war with its southern polities.Government
Narr is only unified on a map. Its borders were drawn by Estaria as part of its south-eastern colonization project, and the region that is now Narr is the homeland of several Human and Droven tribes and ethnic groups with wildly different beliefs and customs. The Lor'Kecht Advoch
The official ruling body of Narr is the Lor'Kecht Advoch (pronounced Lore-Katch Advoke), meaning "Authority of the Lorvi King." This means that their ruling body is exclusively comprised of Lorvi humans in a heretical monarchical system. The stability of the Advoch is vital to Estaria's economy, and its regime is propped up and backed by Estaria's military. The Advoch functions as a semi-autonomous puppet government with very little direct control over Narr's southern territories, which are more sparsely populated lands of Droven and Zeeci humans.Foreign Relations
As a puppet-state of Estaria, the Advoch's functions as an ally to Estarian interests, though the government's weak hold over its diverse population and pre-Estarian history of conflict further complicates this relation. Narr is a sworn enemy of T'Ched, having constant territorial disputes over the Gnashi Desert, the infertile but strategically vital desert expanse of T'Ched's eastern border. Other polities maintain friendly or neutral relations with the Advoch in order to gain access to its Heart Seeds and Aether.Geography
Narr is the most ecologically varied polity in Vildrel because of its tall shape, spanning far into the cold, mountainous north, through the hot deserts of the east, and into the volcanic ashlands of the south. Though the majority of Narr's land is craggy, sparsely populated desert. The vast majority of Narr's population, and its capital, are in the north-western forest and plains that border Estaria and Lake Passi. This fertile land borders The Enclave of the Free Peoples to the north. To the east of their capital is the southern half of the Blue Bog, which is the Lor'Kecht's main source of income.Major Cities
Alnuk
Alnuk, meaning Crag of Gold, is the capital of Narr and the seat of the Lor'Kecht Advoch. It is settled at the base of the Fingers of Olva in the savana plains of northeastern Narr, between Lake Passi and the Blue Bog. Its location makes it valuable for resource extraction, trade, and defense. The proximity to the Blue Bog makes it ideal for obtaining heart seeds for Vildrel's lucrative slave trade.History
The current territory of Narr was unified under the Advoch in 1894 SE, less than three centuries before the current world date. Before that date, the Lor'Kecht Advoch ruled over the northern territory for centuries. With assistance from Estaria in 1873, the Advoch fought a campaign of conquest over the southern territories and the eastern Gnashi Desert, land that was historically held by Zeeci humans. This was called the Yellow Mountain Wars, which ended with the Zeeci surrender and the Treaty of the Forge in 1893.The name Narr was given by Estarian colonists who propped up the Advoch's regime during this time of conquest, abbreviated from the Lorvi word narschetar, which means gift of nature.
