Droven are a sapient species of people in
Vildrel common in the region south of
Estaria.
Biology
Droven are a humanoid species with physical features resembling a combination of rats and birds. Their bodies are covered in oily fur, save for their hands, feet, and tail, which have a thick leathery texture dotted with scales.
Their animal-like appearance has them easily mistaken for
Chimera, and some human biologists argue that Droven are Chimera that have simply adapted to reproduce. However, they cannot be created in the same was a Chimera, and they do not posess Heart Seeds. This combined with their consistant lifespan and their ability to reproduce points to them being a distinct sapient species.
History
The origin of Droven is unclear, as they do not resemble humans in the same way that Giants and Dredges do, and they can't be explained as Chimeras or Aberrations.
Giant creation
Droven reappeared in historical record in the early thirteenth century, with the Mynuk of
T'Ched being the first
Human people to encounter Droven in 1216 SE.
The most widely believed explanation for Droven is that they were created by
Giant Artificers. Giants themselves will often refer to Droven as their "child forefathers," reflecting the belief that ancient Giants resurrected the Droven Race, which had, allegedly, gone extinct before
the age of humanity, thousands of years before the current era.
The Droven were created with and advanced form of
Arborism that is now lost even to the Giants. Surviving accounts of their creation describe the use of
Heart Seed, but not in the way that
Chimera are created. The process is recorded in art and song, but with tragically little detail.
Reason for Creation
Giants claim that Droven were servants of
The Atovist Pantheon when they were present in
Vildrel, and that they represent a more pure form of creation, particularly Olva, the god of Purpose. Although the Giants were not
Atovists, they did believe in the existance of their pantheon, and worshiped the dead gods as
Eclectic Materialists. The belief that Droven were servants of Olva came from archeological ruins discovered in the place that would become
Edruva, where ancient pottery and burial shrouds showed depictions of Droven in communion with the god.
