The Duryad Royal Army

The Duryad Royal Army is the primary military body of the Duryad armed forces, serving alongside the The Duryadi Royal Navy. A direct reflection of Duryadi culture, it maintained an equal level of discipline, strategic prowess and organization. It is among the most effective armies of Naghron during their current Age of Expancion. Newer reforms reflect some Shaladar  and Gholdahar influences – units sourced from past, conquered rival powrs are frequent utilized to fill the ranks e.g.; naghrovadhs, barzulanors and (following Battle of Qurthi ) Fiongians, meeting the Sultanate's demand for light cavalry and skirmishers. Since much of the Duryadi military focused on the strategy and skill of generals utilizing militia troops, heavy infantry were recruited from the light infantery veterans. It is comprised of both non-magic light infantry, equipped the best equipment avaliable and magic users spezialised for every possible situation from shock-combat to peacekeeping. Though this army is not the largest one, it is most definetly among the most feared and efficent ones in the world, capable of almost any military ground operation.   Although Duryadh's navy was always its main military force, the army acquired a key role in the spread of Duryad's power over the native peoples of northern Naghron and the Raihun region. Duryad's military also allowed it to expand into Merdun and the Thrakiot Islands. This expansion transformed the military from a body of citizen-soldiers into a multinational force composed of a combination of allies, citizens and foreign mercenary units. The Duryad Royal Army was a combined arms force, which comprised light and heavy infantry, siege engines, skirmishers, light and heavy cavalry, as well as war elephants and chariots. Supreme command of the military was initially held by civilian community leaders. After major reforms, professional military generals were appointed directly by Duryad's Kapral.   The Duryad Royal Army stood at the center of the duryadi state, citizens trained in the disciplines and honor of a warrior society. Subject to military drill from early teens, the Duryadi became one of the most renowned military forces in Naghron and Euron. Currently, at the height of Duryad's power it is commonly accepted by her neighboring lands that "The greatest misfortune for Duryad's enemies is that they are Duryad's enemies"

Structure

The military chain of command was relatively uniform across the Empire. In each province, the deployed legions' legati (legion commanders, who also controlled the auxiliary regiments attached to their legion) reported to the Provincial lord, who also headed the civil administration. The lord in turn reported direct to the emperor in Wadrun.

History

Foundation period

The earliest form of the Tymerian military was a steppe-nomadic cavalry force. This was centralized by Deman I from Gholdahar tribesmen inhabiting Southern Naghron, primarily in the Raihun region.   These horsemen became an irregular force of raiders used as shock troops, armed with weapons like bows and spears. They were given the conquered lands. In addition they acquired wealth during campaigns.   Merhan I organized a standing army paid by salary rather than looting or fiefs. The infantry were called zarytarys. The force was made up by foreign mercenaries for the most part, and only a few Tymerians were content to accept salaries in place of timars. Foreign mercenaries were not required to convert as long as they obeyed their Tymerian commanders.
