Dratuga

The Dratuga, being an odd cousin of dragonborn, combine the best attributes of dragons, humanoids, and turtles. Usually mistaken for a particularly fearsome tortle or a shelled dragonborn, dragontortleborn are a rare sight in most worlds. Despite their small numbers, dragontortleborn are every bit as proud as their dragonborn cousins. While the dragonborn make their wars on land, dragontortleborn carve out territory in the sea.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dratuga being decendants of the Dragon turtles resemble bipedal dragon turtles in most respects, being covered with scales and having distinctively saurian facial structures with large, streamlined shells with jagged protrusionson their backs that were capable of covering their backs. Dratuga had non-prehensile muscular finned tails that grew to three or four feet in length, and these were used for balance and aquatic proplsion. The vast majority possess the standard four limbs seen in most other humanoid races. Members of this race often possess horns, spikes, and other bony protrusions that vary between individuals.

Growth Rate & Stages

Like their cousins, dratuga hatch from eggs. Instead of being reared by their elders, dratuga form pods with their peers upon hatching. These groups travel and learn together until their adulthood, when they are considered worthy of joining larger dratuga society. Many dratuga do not survive through their adolescence as a result of this practice.

Dragons of the Deep

Like true dragons, dragon tortles collect treasure, first by sinking ships and then by sifting through the wreckage for coins and other precious items. A dragon tortle swallows treasure for transport, then regurgitates it when it reaches its lair. Dragon tortles dwell in caves hidden in coral reefs or beneath the seafloor, or along rugged stretches of coastline. If a choice cave is already inhabited, a dragon turtle attacks its current residents in an attempt to take over.

Mercenary Monsters

A dragon tortle is smart enough to be bribed, and pirates sailing seas patrolled by these creatures quickly learn to offer them treasure in exchange for safe passage. Clever sahuagin sometimes ally with dragon turtles, enticing them with treasure to use their blistering breath weapons in sahuagin raids against ships and coastal settlements.
