New Year's Resolutions 2024

What the new year brings to you will depend greatly on what you bring into the new year.
— Vern McLellan

2023

As I think about 2023, I am proud of what I was able to accomplish both in my professional life, home life, and hobby life. Worldbuilding is truly one of my passions and I am glad I was able to embrace it more. Even though I did not complete every goal I had during the various World Anvil events, I felt accomplished nonetheless.

2024

For 2024 I have a bunch of personal resolutions some of which will undoubtedly help in my worldbuilding but in specific for World Anvil, I want to continue flushing out The Veil, I want to participate in all events and keep expanding my experience, I also want to work on a novella, a short story that takes place in The Veil. That is my biggest goal of this year and I am feeling good about it thus far. In order to better tackle these resolutions I have a plan. Besides filling out this article with 10 articles or more that will certainly influence me, teach me, and inspire me, I plan to be more active in the community and more bold with my articles and writing. I already have joined a chapter taking steps towards these goals.

Below I will layout multiple inspirational articles and give my thoughts on them. I also will use this article to do a top 6, in no particular order, for the tradition category of World Ember of which I am sponsor.

Resolution Articles

Savelan Geography Lesson
Generic article | Sep 14, 2024

An introduction to the world of Malkora, from a Savelan perspective.

This article by my Chapter leader Strixxline is a fantastic course in world primers and organization. I love how we the readers are introduced to the world by an encyclopedic character with their own views on the world but we are still free to pick which articles we will go further in to (I'm deep diving). I hope to incorporate something akin to a primer like this, a well organized article that gives my readers just enough of a path to follow and discover my worlds. The artwork also helps bring life to the world and unfortunately I have no artistic ability in that regard, but I want more art that is indicative of the world.

Aerie O-1
Spacecraft | Dec 19, 2024

The Aerie O-1 is the first dedicated Spaceborne Warning and Control System (SWACS) fielded by the Jovian Orbital Guard. Large, bulky, and packed full with sophisticated electronics and sensors, it is capable of precisely identifying and tracking objects.

I am an enjoyer of sci-fi but actually creating a sci-fi world especially as vast as Solaris always seems to daunting to me. However Skairunner's work here is truly inspiring. This is for all articles in this world but 1st the theming is spot on, its beautiful and always matches. I love how the information is presented it feels spacey, it feels sci-fi. Directly related to the article I love how detailed it is and it presumes nothing, acronyms are explained, links to people and factions are given, it gives enough history about the spacecraft and truly brings it to life. You understand the purpose and can see how its useful and see how it can cause issues etc. The worlds I create have vehicles or special technology that I hope I can give as much breath and depth to. I also really want to improve my CSS, layouts and theming so that each article feels like it belongs and is not just me answering a survey.

Goosujati
Language | Dec 8, 2023

A simple ideographic script used for signage by the Bieggjan.

This article by Kittymonster took me absolutely by surprise. Was not expecting to find some conlang and this one is perfect. It is simple and yet versatile and helpful. I love the layout of the glyphs and I really love puzzles so solving the example messages made me feel like I am really learning another language. My takeaway from this article is immersion, reading this really gave me an understanding of the world even if it is an older language, it helps shape the world and cast it in a particular light. I hope to bring some of the languages to life in my worlds, even though the level of detail may not be there, we shall see.

Vellich Profession Paths
Organization | Jul 10, 2024
This article by elspeth87 is a great use of the organization template and other features in world anvil. There are lot of links which for the lore-fiend in me is fantastic. I want to get better at layout information in my articles and I would love to have an article as detailed as this with links that go to other detailed articles. As for the content of the article, I always have questions such as: What happens when this profession pathway structure is challenged? I always find conflict interesting for what it starts and how it ends. I do love how everyone in this world knows where they belong the focus on being the best in your position tells us a lot about the people.

Arimoanga
Character | Dec 17, 2023

This moon-eating lion spirit is one of the mythical Celestial Gluttons. At heart, it's just an enormous kaiju cat.

This article by kitoypoy is a fun one. I am not the biggest cat person but this big cat seems to be a fun time. I love how kitoypoy starts every article (at least that I've read) with vignettes of information from the instructor and Sgt. We are given two characters to guide us through the world. I have tried to do something similar to this where quotes before articles are various people in the world, but kitoypoy takes it a step further with it being the same characters and them have their own articles, something I hope to do. Lots of characters in my worlds, I want to make sure I do them all justice.

Meadow goblins
Ethnicity | Jun 14, 2024
Blue Fairy 74's article is a nice one that shows great theming and artwork. The highlight of it for me is the layered clothing art, showing the difference styles of clothing. This article has a level of depth I hope to bring in to my species and cultures. Their use of containers allows for this article to have its own direction. Using the additional prompts as inspiration rather than hard fast required sections. I plan to make sure of containers more to help achieve more relevancy on my articles.

Greenwood Honey
Item | Dec 2, 2023

Once back in the village, this barrel of liquid and comb would be separated and filtered, readied to pour into barrels & jars to be shared with all who wished. Some would be taken to the Halfling village a day's journey away to be traded for other goods.

River Fang managed to take such a simple item and give it life in their world. I love getting sections on the processing and usage of the honey. I also enjoy the insight it gives into Mauskin culture. Item articles are ones that I have the least of in this world and my other. The technology, produce, goods of a world, city and culture are great windows into the world, gives unique perspectives. I certainly want to step up my item game, especially when its one so impactful.

Forever Storm
Physical / Metaphysical Law | Jan 28, 2025

A storm raging around Temperil for the last million years, only getting stronger and stronger.

Mochimanoban did a fantastic job on this storm article. I love a good natural law article, just given rules of a world that people adapt or attempt to adapt to. History and tips for suviving were the best parts, because you know figuing out the survial took some trial and error. The Veil doesn't have too many natural law phenomena, but the are a few and I want to make sure I highlight them properly and bring in the perspective of the denizens, how they interact with this law, if at all.
