Tenvir, Death's Hunter

Guardian of Frusenhel Tenvir (a.k.a. Death's Hunter, Frost Fang, Wolf of Winter)

No one can escape death; the white wolf of Berun makes sure of that. - Norrian Hunter
Amongst the many servants of Berun, the god of winter and death, Tenvir is by far the most loyal and ruthless in his duties. He is often tasked with guarding the lands and entrance of Frusenhel, the Realm of Ice and the Dead to ensure the dead cross and the living do not. When those who refuse to meet their end, they will often meet Tenvir and meet a violent death as they are dragged away to be judged. It is usually said on a cold winter's night when a horrid howl can be heard all around that the Tenvir is on the hunt for those that refuse to die and for any that get in his way will be taken away as well.

Personal history

The Wolf of Winter

When the nine realms were created after the Fall of the Elder Gods, Frusenhel was empty and lifeless when it first came into being with a single being to be found in it, that was until from its icy depth arose a wolf of great stature and majesty that the first sound it made was its mighty howl that was said to have echoed throughout the realm, its first instinct to come to mind was to hunt, roaming across the icy wasteland, it found no quarry to stalk. Until he finally saw another creature in its path and struck it with speed as fast as the wind, only to be confused as it could not sink its teeth into it, encountering for the first time a Spirit of the dead and in time more would arrive with the white wolf attempt to hunt these Spirits to no avail. Yet the ferocity and unyielding nature of the wolf began to sow fear into them, and they fled at the sight of it. This soon gained the attention of the ruler of this frozen realm, Berun, the god of the dead, and he confronted the wolf, leading to a clash between the two as he went into a frenzy at the sight of a living creature. Both were evenly matched, as the wolf lacked its killing edge from never making a kill, and Berun was still a young god who lacked the understanding of his powers.   The god's only advantage was a clear mind that he would extensively use against the blood-lusting white wolf before him and devise a plan to stop the wolf. Berun would lure the wolf near a vast crevasse and, blinded by its rage, would fall deep below the ice with no means of escaping the rift beath the ice no matter how many times it clawed and bit at the ice as it howled in rage at its imprisonment. But in time, the anger subsided, and the wolf finally calmed, calling out to Berun to free him from his self-made prison. But Berun was cautious with the savage wolf as he could not allow the beast to roam in his lands to go on a rampage once more, wondering if he should seal this beast away to ensure it did not cause harm in the future for and the other gods of the Elenithir. The wolf beseeched to reconsider, stating that it did not mean to cause such chaos, for it only followed its nature and vowed to keep it in check, knowing it only caused trouble lacking a real purpose with it.   At that moment, the wolf vowed to serve Berun as a guardian of its domain and ensure that no being would dare cause harm to his realm, both living and dead, showing no deception in its words. With his power, Berun would hold the white wolf's words as the truth and raise the ice from the crevasse to free it from its prison and bring it before him. The wolf lowered its head in submission at the feet of Berun, with the god asking what his name was, revealing it had none. In learning this, Berun would name the wolf Tenvir the "Winter's Fury" for its fierce nature, and from that day, Tenvir would keep his word, watching over Frusenhel, protecting it from the spirits the grew defiant, unwanted intruders that meant harm and acted as a warden to those imprisoned in the icy domain by the gods. He would also ensure that the gateway to the realm of the dead was permanently secured to ensure that no one would enter without permission or escape, keeping the realm in proper order so long as he stood watch over it.

Hunter Of The Restless Dead

In time, Tenvir would become Berun's most dutiful and loyal servant, always standing vigilant over his realm and asking for nothing in return from his master. Berun so enough sought to test Berun's loyalty to see if the wolf could tame its nature should it be allowed to roam free with its master watching him. Berun would task his guardian to hunt down a mortal who refused to accept death and needed to be brought back to face judgment, sending Tenvir to deal with it personally. Thus, the white wolf was sent to the mortal realm of Middenhal for the first time, thrilled to hunt actual prey for the first time in its life, yet overwhelmed by the life surrounding him in the land of the living. For a moment, his instincts began to overwhelm him as they did long before he became a servant of Berun, but he had learned to control his urges and continued with the task given to him by his master.   Tenvir found it easy to find his prey, for the scent of death was upon them as their time in this world was over, and he ensured they would be sent to where they belonged. His speed, being that of the wind, ensured that his quarry would not escape his pursuer as the land around him began to become cold with every step he took, for he was a servant of death, and none could ever escape it. Soon enough, he came face to face with the object of his task, a lone warrior whose time had long passed, still clinging to life when there was none, their spilled blood only urging Tenvir to strike and end it all, yet he would offer a chance to the warrior to come peaceful before using force. His ghostly form approached the warrior with silence, and only when he drew close to them did he meet the icy blue eyes of the Wolf of Winter. The warrior did not cower or lash out at the great beast as death held no need for fear, as Tenvir asked the warrior to come with him, willingly to be judged for their defiance of death to decide if they would be sent to dine in Athelheim or forever freeze in the domain of the wolf's master, or be taken by force should he chose to face Tenvir's fangs.   The warrior remained defiant at the choice given to them, seeing that they desired to protect their people from all harm, and pleaded to Tenvir to let him stay for a while more, only to reply that his time was over. He must go where he was meant to be as the white wolf began to circle them first beginning to surround the green landscape around them; the warrior lashed out several times yet failed to hit his target at every turn; Tenvir did not strike back once as he continued to speak with authority to see reason in their folly. The more Tenvir spoke, the more the warriors saw reason as they realized that there was no honor in clinging to a life well lived and that their duty would be passed on to others; this finally allowed his hunter to send them to the afterlife and with a mighty howl, Tenvir vanished with all the presence of winter with him. The task was completed, and the secret test satisfied his curiosity; Berun would reward his wolf by becoming his hunter in Middenhal to collect those who refused to die and bring them for judgment, always offering a painless death or a violent one should they defy him with none ever being able to escape no matter how hard they tried.
