Unicorns Ethnicity in The Realms Beyond | World Anvil

Unicorns

Unicorns have long been said to be made in the first breath of the world by the Creators (the original Queens), in the same moment as Dragons to be perfectly balanced between Creation and Destruction. They are among the rarest of the fae; noble, gentle creatures with the power of raw creation that is unrivaled in the Realms beyond the Rulers. They have also been known as:   Qilin, Al-mi'raj, and more.   Akin to Phoenix and Dragon fae, Unicorns might be pulled toward specific elements or passions, and so they are present in all Courts for their own individual reasons. Their powers of creation see them welcome anywhere they go, with herds present in each Court though often in remote places typically close to a body of water of some sort.

Inherent Abilities

  • Shapeshift - (Racial) - All unicorn fae have the ability to transform from their equine form to human innately.
(It costs them nothing to do so, though the ability level (ease, quickness, midshaped forms, etc) are left up to the individual players.)
  • Creation - (Racial) - All Unicorns share a gift for creation, granting them a fourth ability slot on profiles, though what they create is very dependent on the individual rather than the race. Some use this ability to grant tightly held wishes, others to create rare items, gems, sparking life in inanimate objects, and more.
(This power must be listed out in the profile, noted as Unicorn Bloodline. What precisely they create, and the skill with which they do so is up to the individual.)
  • Amplification - (Racial) - With the touch of their horn unicorns can purify corruption in things, while their tears thought to magnify healings and other magics, and their blood rumored to grant raw power boosts. Due to these traits unicorns have been hunted heavily by humans and rarely show themselves in the Mortal Realm since the Dark Ages.
(These abilities come with the cost of being hunted, and are things that prompt many unicorns to be wary unless they are unaware of the risks and young.)

Community Style

As rare fae it is incredibly hard for Unicorn to conceive children, particularly with each other. Due to this most Unicorn blooded currently present in the Realms are mixed fae, and those who are pure blooded rarely keep to insular communities, preferring to be focused on their Court as a whole, or whatever particular faction or project they have given their passion to. Unlike other rare fae Unicorn's are the most likely to have most loosely connected family communities in the form of herds, though this isn't true for all of them.
