Dragons Ethnicity in The Realms Beyond | World Anvil

Dragons

Dragons have long been said to be made in the first breath of the world by the Creators (the original Queens), in the same moment as Unicorns to be perfectly balanced between Creation and Destruction. They are among the rarest of the fae; fierce, predatory creatures with the power of raw destruction that is unrivaled in the Realms beyond the Rulers. They have also been known as:
Ouroboros, ušumgal, mušḫuššu, Aži, lùhng and more.
Akin to Phoenix and Unicorn fae, Dragons might be pulled toward specific elements or passions, and so they are present in all Courts for their own individual reasons. Their powers of destruction prompt a certain level of caution, and assuredly space to be granted to them when they claim a home. The most territorial by far of the rare fae, Dragon's often seek to command places of importance, and cultivate reputations of might.

Inherent Abilities

    • Shapeshift - (Racial) - All dragon fae have the ability to transform from their beast form to human innately.

(It costs them nothing to do so, though the ability level (ease, quickness, midshaped forms, etc) are left up to the individual players.)

    • Enduring Flame - (Racial) - There are few things indeed stronger than a Dragons scale, their claws and teeth. Dragons are the ultimate being of destruction, and yet incredibly hard to damage when in their true forms. Due to these properties though dragons have been hunted in the past for their scales, their claws and fangs, leading to them being incredibly territorial when someone unknown enters what they consider their home. A defensive mechanism lives with them always in their dragon's breath, though unlike common myth might suggest not all breathe fire, some might have sonic abilities, others weather summoning, one might turn creatures to stone, and so on.
(There is no ability factor in the durability of their bodies, however their 'flame' defense is highly individual and dependent on life lived as well as each character's skill. That is to say, yes, a dragon can set themselves on fire if not cautious. They just likely won't burn)

    • Destruction - (Racial) - All Dragonkind share an ability for destruction magic granting them a fourth ability slot on profiles, though how they destroy is wildly different in each. Some might use the traditional flame to incinerate to ash, others might be able to cause earthquakes, direct lightning, there are as many differences as there are dragons, and most will claim that they alone know their specific skill.
(This power must be listed out in the profile, noted as Dragon Bloodline. How exactly they destroy, and the skill with which they do so is up to the individual.)

Community Style

As rare fae it is incredibly hard for Dragons to conceive children, particularly with each other. Due to this most Dragons blooded currently present in the Realms are mixed fae. Dragons, unlike the others, are not known for always seeking out found family though, instead a fair amount value and seek isolation, while others might claim a territory and consider those within their area as part of their hoard. If Dragons do attach to others, fae or human, is it typically advised to accept their interest and the compliment paid by it.
