Korzhûn Settlement in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Korzhûn (KORR-zoon)

Korzhûn is one of the largest settlements in Icalar and is located in its northern territories, south of the Praethin River and its barrier wall of Maidra Foothills, and north-northwest of the Qos River. Its population pre-war (c. 985AC) was around 300,000 people, which dropped to around 250,000 post-war by 1000AC.   As the capital city of Ustraria, it is also one of the oldest. The original settlement was founded in 450AC due to the presence of the Kor Well, an Ega Root and another groundwater source; Embermore Keep sits on the site of the original settlement, while the House of Korzhûn -- the home of the local Shepherds of the House of Leavings -- was then built around the Kor Well itself. Its characteristic tunnite buildings and vlekik tile roofs tend to give it a warm presence and are a nod to the country's firm footing in the fine stone trade.   It is governed by the diplomatic Korzhûn Stewardship housed in the Keep, with the Itoqir as its military. As one of the strongest members of the Pact of the Blessèd during the War of the Six, its military system was adopted by the alliance entire. Day-to-day city enforcement is conducted by the Ustrarian City Guard; in peacetime, some members of the Itoqir may choose to take on City Guard duties, but this is also occurring due to there not currently being enough personnel post- war and plague.

Demographics

Korzhûn is a very multicultural city, with a healthy mix of humans, eova, and fauns. More nae'cthosai are beginning to settle here as the younger generations shake off the xenophobic tendencies of their predecessors and the ravages of war send many adrift.   The war has taken its toll on the economy and the people, becoming a great leveler. Although class strata was not exceedingly apparent, those that could once count themselves as the higher echelon find themselves under just as much strain as the lower servicepeople, and there is not a huge difference in wealth -- something attributed to the Stewardship's efforts to provide aid equally and the general coming-together mentality in the face of the Bitter Hand.   Pre-war, much of Korzhûn's population had the luxury of being intellectuals or craftsmen if they were not full-time military personnel. Post-war, with the army in tatters and priorities upended, most are employed in the rebuilding of the economy and the stabilization of the nation in one form or another.

Government

Korzhûn Stewardship, enforced by the Ustrarian City Guard and if necessary, the Itoqir.

Points of interest

The Korzhûn Commemoration Bridge is near-immediately outside the western gate of the city, and was erected in 602AC.   The Blushing Lioness is a relatively quiet tavern owned and managed by Hephin Moduut. It is easily-spotted by its unusually large kyrti vine outside, which was a gift from Carabal Acosaphaura -- Eraleon Acosaphaura's father -- who was a friend of Hephin's father. More recent generations of Acosaphaura and even the Hidden Company frequented the establishment.   Channeler's Rock is a prominent natural rock formation a little ways outside the western wall of the city, a little farther north from the Commemoration Bridge and near the treeline of a small copse. It was here that Devatska Acosaphaura witnessed the death of her husband Eraleon.   Ustr Tower is the largest and oldest belltower in the city, named after the eponymous hero Ustr. It is considered the primary timekeeper and all other belltowers in the city follow the lead of its 'mother bell'.   The Bright Terraces are located on the northern side of Embermore Keep on a series of ancient earthen terraces, and serve as the city's memorial gardens. Many families choose to commemorate their loved ones following their cremation and Shepherd's Release with a bell hung in a dedicated lattice.
