Kaavius Springfist Character in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Kaavius Springfist (KAH-vee-us)

Master Provisioner

Kaavius is a Master Provisioner in the service of the Itoqir of Korzhûn, and a veteran of the War of the Six. He is one of only five known eova to have ever acted as an outright Provisioner and the first to achieve the rank of Master Provisioner.   Provisioners are valued officials in any military unit and require significant training and experience; although many eova have the initial skillset predisposing them to the role, ironically those skills lead to a lack of trust that stops them from rising higher in the ranks than a grunt; Kaavius’ career has been hard-won and he is adamant about “not being like other eova” – something a rash of slander is threatening to take away.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Trim build, fairly fit. Generally regarded as handsome by both eova and non-eova standards.

Facial Features

Usually has a skeptical expression; prefers to be cleanshaven but lately tends to have a five-o'clock shadow. Large leaf-shaped, up- and out-turned ears typical of eova, skin pigment darkening toward tapered tips.

Identifying Characteristics

Vaguely star-shaped burn scar on left upper cheekbone, eyelid, and eyebrow. Large cauterized burn scar on chest.   Unliore notes his Ega as 'a steady pale green-blue and orange candleflame with a faint tail'; Fieron later remarks that it tends to settle into 'a sketch of the moon-on-its-back crescent typical of Clerics'.

Special abilities

Extremely mild Cleric abilities: he can (inconsistently) heal small abrasions and bruising, or help with minor afflictions such as headaches, heat stroke, muscle aches/tears, etc.

Apparel & Accessories

Fond of jerkins/waistcoats after taking to heart Ezmer's advice that they are the quickest way to polish one's appearance; in the Ustrarian style they are typically surcoat-length and have an asymmetrical hem, hitting at mid-thigh on one side and reaching to just below the knee on the other, and fasten on the shorter side.   Typically wears dark heavycloth breeches paired with tailored plaincloth long-sleeved shirts in subdued jewel tones and damask patterns. His jerkins or waistcoats tend to be in natural leather colors with subtly-embroidered edges. If he expects to be traveling he swaps his leather shoes for boots. His belt consists of two toggle-and-drawstring pouches fitted close to the belt, while his garnery is oxblood-dyed leather -- an expensive promotion gift from his mentor -- and includes an Affenblau compass, clock-watch, and a few keys and charms (including his sleep fetish). His belt also holds his dagger (worn more often not only as a war veteran habit but in the Unen style). Other items may be added when traveling, such as the wicker egg-shaped case with his half of the penecta pair he shares with Unliore.   On the occasion of his promotion to Master Provisioner, Unliore gave him a heseta, diamond-shaped brooch -- in the Keismeba style -- she had made for him that depicts a pen, a wrist-abacus (ring-shaped), and a heavensash leaf, on the back of which is engraved the provisioner motto 'Provided, and thus assured and victorious.' along with his initials. He usually wears it pinned to his jerkin or, if not wearing one, to his belt.

Specialized Equipment

Even in peacetime, habitually wears his provisioner's notecase and notebracer, unless traveling. Also carries a dagger for self-defense.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Kaavius was born to Teza and Malak Springfist into Gild Whitewell, a gild minora to Gild Bloodgrove in southern Unenshuut, which was attacked when he was five by Xa'aroch and essentially wiped out. Ezmer Firekeen, one of the elders, ensured the survival of many of the children, including Kaavius and his best friend Berashani Steamsong. Kaavius lost both his family (including an unborn sibling) and the anchor of a hometown in the attack, even though Ezmer brought them into the safety of the Bloodgrove to the west -- ironically one of the more permanent eova settlements. He lived here until he was fourteen, whereupon a strong wish and aptitude to become a Cleric drove him to hitch a ride north to Eibe, the closest large settlement with a Holding. However, the Holding refused him entry for a number of reasons, among them "too old", "not predisposed, being a eova", "a waste of time".   Frustrated and ashamed, he would try at -- and be rejected by -- two more Holdings before being overcome by a wave of self-hate and bitterness; he would continue to travel around various settlements with different Gilds, never staying in one place long, while practicing both his trade skills and self-restraint. His fellow eova mocked him for his attempts and he began to socialize with them less and less -- the grand exception being Berashani, Ezmer, and Berashani's sister Sylevinia ("Sylvie"), the latter of whom he entered into a relationship with in late 981AC. Sylvie instead found his ambition and drive inspiring and it prompted her to seek her own non-traditional, non-Gild career as a koza-rider of the modest military of Memboti, across the river to the east of Eibe. Unfortunately it was him visiting her in Memboti in early 982AC that would lead to him encountering Xa'aroch again when he led an attack on the town; Xa'aroch attempted to corrupt many who stood in his path, and Kaavius was unable to stop her from killing herself to avoid it. He was also unable to do anything in the face of Xa'aroch, who simply disregarded him and went on his way, the attack complete. This merely strengthened his self-hate and desire to "not be like other eova", and he saw vocation as a way to drown himself.   In apprenticing himself to the Broken Hill Mining House Kaavius reached Okahn when he was nineteen, and became swept up in the fervor of the growing Order of the Burning Crown, which had just been proclaimed the state religion. His determination to master his eova tendencies led him to become a devotee and a year later this would intrigue fellow churchgoer Iubrach Roor. Roor was an assistant to Yenthalo Lity, a Provisioner of the Itoqir in Korzhûn at the time, and invited Kaavius to first work for him in secret before eventually revealing him to Lity with a recommendation for his formal training as a provisioner. This proved fruitful if hard-won, and he succeeded Roor when he became chronically ill and had to retire prematurely. He was promoted to Provisioner proper in 984AC, and Master Provisioner in 990AC following his services in the War of the Six, at Devatska Acosaphaura's particular recommendation.   In the first days of the war he met Unliore Jrei'ein during her assignment to a scouting team, to which he had also been relegated. They would eventually be part of the Guljebb Detachment sent to Fort Guljebb, and through its trials and tribulations the two developed an unlikely friendship that continues to the present day. Their mettle was tested when the detachment was called to the central theater, where -- among other conflicts -- both were involved with the Charge of the Martyrs; in the course of the unprecedented conflict Kaavius was wounded in the chest and, desperate, Unliore cauterized it until medical attention could be obtained. When the war ended, Unliore returned to Korzhun like many of the Fiir with Kaavius, but she soon returned to Keismeb; the two corresponded and often visited one another, with their last visit in person being in 996AC.   Throughout his career, however, he nurtured his hate and desire for revenge on Xa'aroch, even if he did not outright seek it.

Heterosexual

Education

Largely self-taught, moderate to high. Ezmer Firekeen was unable to fund schooling at a Hall of Learning for his orphans.

Past: Assistant-Provisioner, Provisioner.   Current: Master Provisioner in the Itoqir of Korzhûn.

Accomplishments & Achievements

War veteran; one of only five recorded eova Provisioners and the first to achieve the rank of Master.

Failures & Embarrassments

Losing Sylevinia; not being able to defeat or find Xa'aroch.

Mental Trauma

The destruction of Gild Whitewell; the death of Sylevinia.

Intellectual Characteristics

Cynicism is a thin veneer over great pride in his work, infallibility, discipline, and integrity. He tries very hard to have a lack of emotional attachment to others.

Morality & Philosophy

Adamant about the greater good.

Taboos

Anything that goes too far against Burning Crown doctrine or smacks of corruption/hedonism.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To be as little like a eova as possible; to continue to earn his title of Master Provisioner and do good work; to be a faithful devotee of the Burning Crown; to have his revenge on Xa'aroch.

Virtues & Personality perks

Driven; takes great pride in his work; high integrity.

Vices & Personality flaws

Deeply-seated self-hate, self-doubt, and internalized subconscious racism; despite desiring revenge on Xa'aroch he seems to have done all he can to avoid it in convoluted ways, suggesting a (not wholly unwarranted) cowardice.

Personality Quirks

Places a sleep fetish beneath his pillow to help him sleep.

Hygiene

High

Social

Retains friendship with Unliore and Iubrach despite the war's end; maintains contact with other Provisioners and Devatska Acosaphaura.

Family Ties

He will always have a connection to the other survivors of Gild Whitewell.

Religious Views

Order of the Burning Crown (Crownist), devoted.

Social Aptitude

Something of an introvert, but this is more of a long-practiced skill of holding back lest he be perceived as a typical eova -- he is more somber than most but will allow the occasional spark of dry wit, or a little teasing charm with those he knows well. Self-confident generally, yet a vein of doubt and impostor syndrome has been buried deep but not gone entirely.

Hobbies & Pets

Smoked intermittently during the war.   Will claim to not be fond of pets, but quickly grows attached to those belonging to others.

Speech

Somewhat gravely voice, but not unpleasantly.   Not unknown to swear. Empeachments/exclamations tend to be those typical of Crownists: "Great Ones be merciful", "Ieb preserve us", "in Iasis' name", "Xados give me strength", etc.

History

Though Xa'aroch has no memory of Kaavius and would likely regard him as insignificant if he did, Kaavius considers Xa'aroch to be responsible for his life's path and grief.
