Nightshade Demesne
The Nightshade Demesne is the stuff of stories and legend, and none of it is pleasant. None know for certain the true nature of the Demesne, except maybe for some of the Grugach, but they are saying nothing.
Deep in the heart of the Fearwyd Weald there is rumoured to be an ancient tower built by the Antediluvians. From this tower there is said to emanate a dark and malicious will that stretches its dominion over many hundreds of square miles at the centre of the ancient woodland. None have ventured that far in to the Weald and returned to tell the tale.
Consequently, the potent mixture of a dark will, mysterious ancient location, and myths from centuries ago, have lead to many strange tales being told about the Nightshade Demesne. None of it is confirmed however.
Some say that the Great Schism of elvenkind was caused by an event that had its origins in the Demesne. Certainly after the Schism the bulk of the Grugach made their way into the Fearwyd Weald.
One of the most common rumours to persist is that the realm is overseen by an ancient hag named Granny Nightshade. She is said to command old magic as well as the mightiest wizard of legend, and that she has struck bargains with several dukes of the Nine Hells. Many of the forests darkest inhabitants such as jackalweres, trolls and green hags are said to live in her service. Whatever the truth in the stories, if any, Granny Nightshade now most commonly appears as the subject of tall tales told around fireplaces to scare young children into behaving. "Behave yourself little one, or Granny Nightshade will take you in the dead of night and skin you alive!".
Another tale of the Nightshade Demesne tells of a coterie of three primeval Vampire brothers that constantly vie for power between themselves. They are said to hold dark rituals when both the moons are new, sacrificing unwary travellers to some dark, unknown force.
Whatever truth lies behind all the tales and stories, the only thing that is certain is that it would be wise to avoid the heart of the Fearwyd Weald and whatever strange, malignant force abides there.
