Smithtown

Unusual amongst the shelves of Evenglow, Smithtown serves both its twin Imperial masters - the Navy and the Duke as well as the Phelandria at large with its various forges and industry. Named for the blacksmiths that make bend stell to their will, the shelf is also home to other highly skilled craftsmen such as fletchers and wheelwrights. A narrow shelf that, like the others on Evenglow lack the length of their neighbors on Dawnlight. Despite its small area, the red-stone buildings in Smithtown rarely reach more than three stories, frequently topping out at two. Designed with workshops and storefronts on the first floor and living spaces for the artisans and their senior apprentices on the upper levels, these edifices seem to sprawl in comparison to the slender structures that climb the Cliffs elsewhere in the city. Even the alleys in Smithtown have extra girth, designed to have room for the large wagons that the Navy and Legion use to transport their purchases, much to the dismay of the Porters' Guild.

Inside of Smithtown's Workshops

The Naval Base, home to both the Navy's sailors and the Legionnaires that they transport, certainly consume the bulk of the steel forged into various swords, breastplates, and arrowheads in Smithtown. Their appetite for other forged goods - horseshoes, chains, anchors, wheels and the like - seems insatiable, keeping the small but skilled coalition of smiths well employed. Beyond the small and spacious size of their shelf, these same smiths have historically taken steps, sometimes forceful ones, to prevent others from taking up the craft and driving down prices. While they do not have a true association of their own, most believe that they pay the Guild a small retainer to actively discourage entrepreneurs from starting their businesses on other shelves.

Assuming one is willing to pay the steep prices for the goods produced in Smithtown, its connection to the Market Table via the Mistspan makes it more accessible than the rest of Evenglow. Prospective shoppers should, of course, dress appropriately. Between a healthy stipend that residents of Smithtown pay to the Lionguard to ensure regular patrols and the critical nature of their business to the Navy, there are few places on the shelf not under the careful watch of some sort of armed guard. The rivalry between the Guard and the Navy may actually account for more disturbances than theft or other criminal activity.
