Hollin's Forest
Located on the northern border of the Lawless Steppes, following the shoreline of the Gulf of Kharl and the eastern edge of Hammerhead Bay, Hollin's Forest consists of a smattering of tree stands that thicken and expand wherever the winds carry seeds and storms from these cold northern waters. The wide trunks and broad of the hemlocks that dominate Hollin's Forest create plenty of open spaces in which ground squirrels, wild pigs, and spotted deer can live. While the squirrels have a bounty of seeds upon which they can dine, the pigs and deer have a tendency to forage around edges of tree stands where ferns and other plants grow, the interior of these stands too full of shadows and decay pine needs to sustain flora. In the winter, the last, small herds of bison that once ruled the Great Belt shelter amongst the trees and with them come their eternal foes, packs of gaunt, yellow-eyed wolves. Woodpeckers, small songbirds, and make their homes in these trees, filling the forest with cacophony of noise during the day. At night, silent but deadly owls haunt the skies. The River Salvent, which bisects the forest, has a sizeable salmon run that, combined with wild berries that thrive in forest's meadows, sustains a population of dark bears.
The forest sits far from civilization and even the heartiest of homesteaders have found it too far from the safety society to take root. Its dark paths, however, lie an easy ride from Katzpütch and several camps of brigands and other ne'er-do-wells lurk within, a refuge from their illicit enterprises in the south. According to the tales told around campfires in the City of Evershifting Streets, the forest was even named for one such outlaw.
The locations, constituents, and leaders of these small bands constantly shift with the fortunes of their raids upon the caravans that travel the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway.
