Goals and reflections on SummerCamp 2023 among the Tomies!
SummerCamp is the delight of every summer spent on WorldAnvil, and it only gets better when you have a community to share it with. Grab your friends, grab your foes, and let's get to writing! Whether you're a Bronze Buddy or a Dewy Diamond, or anything in between or beyond, there's work to be done!
On the topic of grabbing your friends, this article is all about what the Tomies are getting up to over the course of SummerCamp prep month, and the big event itself!
There are lots of new faces in the Tomes this year, so there are lots of fresh perspectives and worlds to explore. We've got seasoned campers with several years under their belt, and we have first-timers eager and ready to jump into something new!
Many of us are still getting to know each other heading into this year's event, so I can't wait to see where things lead from here!

Community Initiatives from the Chapter

SummerCamp Prep and Thoughts
With every major event, of course, we have homework and prep, so we've put together a collection of the prepwork done by participating members of the Tomes! Check out their pledges and homework articles, and the worlds they're working on!
Strixxline's Pre-Camp Thoughts
I'm stepping into the veterans corner this year, as it's my fifth SummerCamp! As someone who simply can't contain their excitement for this event, I created the now-widespread Camp Feral and couldn't be happier that it's been a hit with so many people. I'll be writing more content for my world Malkora, focusing as much as possible on the Kingdom of Arsavela. My goal this year is to take another Diamond badge home, and to keep the feral spirit alive in the community! I'm also excited to be a community sponsor for SummerCamp, for the first time! I can't wait to see the entries and share them with the community! Keeping the template a secret has me bursting at the seams, but it's part of the fun!
End-of-Camp Thoughts
I set out for diamond this year, and I got it! I really battled through the entire month with a busy schedule and a lot of outside stress, but this SummerCamp has been so impactful to both me and my world, and was a major success in my book. I got to know so much more about the Kingdom of Arsavela, as planned, and I'm excited to spend some time touching up all of the older articles that are now connected to these brand new ones! And I did, indeed, keep the spirit of the event feral all the way through. This was the first major event WA's had since I became a chapter leader, and I'm seeing how much of a delight it is to bring a bunch of excited nerds together to write as a group. And, to think, we're still only getting to know each other! I can't wait to see where our adventures go in the coming months and beyond.

Ninodonlord's Pre-Camp Thoughts
This year brings my first ever Summer Camp! I first became truly active on WorldAnvil during last WorldEmber and the palpable excitement that you could feel during that time in the challenge chat was a delight and part of the reason I am still so happy to be a part of the community and contribute to it. It really helped me during a time when I was staying in Tokyo, a city that can be surprisingly lonely at times, and all of these factors made last December truly exceptional for me, resulting in 25k new words as well as two award nominations for articles written in that time. This season I am looking to recapture that feeling, so I have pledged to shoot for Diamond as well and will use the prompts to flesh out the era and area of my world in which my TTRPG campaign is set (Aruël, a kingdom during the Era of Dice).
End-of-Camp Thoughts
July strangely felt like a lot happened and not much at all! Diamond was achieved as I had pledged, though i had to weather more than a breeze for it. Perhaps this shouldn't have surprised me as much, given that it is 9600+ new words of worldbuilding in a month in which I also started my PhD. But I digress. Like a person being cured of rabies only to immediately go pet and be bit by a raccoon, the incredible Line with the ever amazing Streams as well as my lovely tomies kept me feral throughout the event even on days when I was ready to just let it go. Now, at the end of the road I can report that the prompts helped me greatly at what I had hoped they'd do: I now know so much more about Aruël, its founding mythos and relationship with its neighbours, and about the other civilisations on the continent. All of this will be invaluable during the campaign I have set during this time period and area of the world. I am happy, excited and a bit of a mess of joy right now. Is it WorldEmber yet?
Pre-Camp Thoughts
This is my first Summer Camp, and I'm in it to win it! The prep themes have me thinking deeper about new areas of my world that I have touched on lightly, but not really explored in depth (like Tilth and Smouge). Personally, I always do better with loosely guided writing, such as a prompt or picture for inspiration, so I'm fired up and feral to dig my teeth into those places and see what's up. Based on the Prep topics, I'd like to try and make all 40 prompts fit into a single, cohesive story. But! Achieving 32 is my primary goal. Feral Dewdrop, bay-bee!

Pre-Camp Thoughts
Hello all! This will be the first Summer Camp I will be participating in, and I'm looking forward to giving it my best shot! I will be aiming for the Silver Badge, as it is my first go at this, and I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. Realistic and achievable goals for the win! I will either meet my goal or go over my goal and be pleasantly surprised.
End-of-Camp Thoughts
Hello all! Summer camp has come and gone, far too fast for my liking, but its time to reflect! For the badge goal I set, I can proudly say I succeeded!! A little last minute, but I did complete all 16 prompts I aimed for, which is honestly more than I thought I actually could do, so go me! As for unstated goals and achievements, I am very happy to have participated in assorted WA streams in chat, supporting the work that was shared with me, and cheering on all the wonderful creative beans! It is such a joy to see what you all create, and I look forward to all the reading coming up! Overall, a successful first SummerCamp, and here's to many more!
