Nagasungai Jungle
Hostile Wilderness
The Nagasungai Jungle is placed between two tectonic boundaries that form the Capioera Mountains to the south and a ridge of sharply eroded karsts in the north. This also raises several volcanoes which billow out rock and ash in sudden eruptions. That ash provides abundant nutrients to the plants of the jungle, allowing them to grow incredibly lush. Fierce competition between wildlife has caused it to adapt in ways that have inspired many a horrific legend. Many plants that absorb wild magic from the volcanic ash, also use it as a deterrent in their sap, poisoning and causing mutations in animals that try to eat them. The crew might encounter:
- Blood Rain; tinted red by the soil spewed into the atmosphere by volcanic eruptions.
- The smell of death and rot wafts through the trees; the brief but potent bloom of a corpse flower attracting flies to pollinate it.
- A large radius of meter-thick ash surrounding the base of a volcano where it's too thick for plants to grow.
A Greatwyrm's Domain
Another cause of the jungle's infamy is the leviathan dragon, Hutantakut, that has inhabited the region for as long as can be remembered. She has a massive treasure hoard hidden among the northern karsts, which is supplied by the tribute she demands of small villages in the region. Like most greatwyrms, Hutantakut can shift the weather in her domain, allowing her to more easily control her subjects and ambush intruders. The crew might encounter:
- A deep echoing rumble from amidst the trees, like the hiss of a gargantuan crocodile.
- A platformed stone pyramid just outside a village where Hutantakut receives her tribute.
Precarious Homes
A few travelers from the Tengahpulau Archipelago landed in the jungle long ago, learning how to survive in their harsh surroundings and giving offerings to please the local dragons. Hutantakut gladly accepted the Islanders as her subjects, but quickly turned from savior to tyrant in their eyes as she demanded tribute and temples in her honor, slaughtering any signs of resistance. Despite brutal conditions, the Islander's villages have persevered, and created close bonds between the villagers. The crew might encounter:
- A trail of sticks marked with flags leading back to a tiny gathering of buildings.
- A small bunch of villagers playing music on makeshift instruments around a tiny cooking fire.
Imprisoned Conquerors
About half a century ago, ships from the Domain of Kriemhild landed on the shores of the jungle to build a new colony, but were quickly decimated by the hostile environment. The few settlers that survived were given mercy by a strange power beneath the ground of the jungle, saving them, but also binding themselves to the region. They eventually struck a deal to act as Hutantakut's servants, maintaining order in the dragon's tributary villages as the Dragon's Claw Army. The crew might encounter:
- A rugged quarry where sullen Islanders excavating minerals are overseen by corrupt humanoids with serpentine features.
- A slithering patrol of reptilian soldiers picking apart a stone temple in search of anything useful.
