Grenedwr Fields

Web of Waterways

Streams from the mountain ranges neighboring this region flow into the immense Grenedwr Loch at the heart of the region, before traveling towards the sea along the Tywylled River and Grenedwr Delta. Most cities are built along these waterways, as they provide easy routes for transporting people and goods, without the difficulty of making roads through the surrounding marshes. The crew might encounter:

  • A group of weary, and soggy, travelers that cut their way through the marshes to get between cities.
  • Harbors bustling with various people and goods moving between ships, carts, warehouses, and inns.
  • Farmers carefully burning dead reeds in late winter to reemberse nutrients into the soil.
  • A New Frontier

People first arrived in the Grenedwr Fields just less than a century ago, accidentally discovered by refugee sailors, so most cities are still developing and small in comparison to those in the Old World. The region’s rich pristine fields make farming its largest business, while most manufactured goods must be traded for. Because these settlements were founded by immigrants of various backgrounds there are diverse combinations of cultures, and they are still growing as more people migrate in. The crew might encounter:

  • A conglomeration of different traditions being celebrated as different groups celebrate a change in the seasons.
  • Cities with many buildings and streets in the process of being constructed, especially artisan workshops like forges and masonries.
  • Villagers preparing large quantities of vegetables, grains, and fish to be dried or pickled to eat during winter.
  • United Out of Necessity

After the initial wave of independent settlers, many empires mobilized and set up colonies in the new lands, prompting many settlements in Grenedwr Fields to unite into the combined nation of Arfordolia. Later wars between several nations would end in the collapse of the empires’ colonies, but now that the conflicts have subsided, towns are peaceful but don’t feel much loyalty to one another. The crew might encounter:

  • Bridges and pathways between cities left as half-finished projects.
  • Old warehouses with many low quality weapons waiting to be smelted down into something more useful.
  • Ancient Bones

Pieces of leviathan dragon skeletons can be found embedded into the landscape, giving an overabundance of nutrients to plants and lichens as they slowly wear down. The origin of these bones has puzzled explorers and scholars since people first arrived in the region, inspiring a wide variety of legends. The crew might encounter:

  • A small camp trying to harvest chunks of bone, without much success because of their rigidity.
  • A storyteller describing the magnificence of these dragons long ago, and how their greed caused their own destruction.
  • Pieces of an Ecosystem

While the fields are quite lush, they notably lack large predatory or grazing animals, mostly populated by small waterbirds and amphibians. There’s also an absence of spirits besides Si and Nymphs, despite being a pristine wilderness. The crew might encounter:
    • Large flocks of lily-striders and grebes scatter when disrupted by a lurking giant salamander.
    • A cluster of glowing dots in the night; Hundreds of Si drawn to the presence of a leviathan skeleton.
