Ithfaen Peaks

Volcanic Boundary

The Ithfaen Peaks are formed from the collision of two tectonic plates pushing up limestone earth and forming granite layers beneath it. This also forms pockets of magma that caused volcanic eruptions, and left behind large calderas and created geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles throughout the area. The crew might encounter:

  • A large spot of barren rock with small cracks that superheated water erupts from in geysers.
  • People using buckets on long poles to scoop up water from hot springs to heat food and homes.
  • The bubbling of a mud pot accompanied by the smell of rotten eggs as sulfuric gases escape.

Ancient Caverns

The limestone and dolomite composition of this region, especially in the south, has created expansive cave systems as rain and waves erode the rock. The flow of water also form stalactites, stalagmites, and huge subterranean lakes. The limestone rock is full of fossils from creatures long before recorded history, sometimes spoken of by spirits, which become exposed as the stone erodes. The crew might encounter:

  • The splashing and gurgling of waves on sea cliffs as they into submerged caves below.
  • The sound of dripping water and whispering winds as they echo out from the mouth of a cave.
  • The shape of a large bug-like creature turned to stone, distinguished from the rock around it by a darker hue.

The Aftermath of Empires

Shortly after the discovery of the Isle, the Domain of Kriemhild landed in the region to set up its own settlements, but found it already occupied by a Wayakeskwen tribe. After failing to negotiate for the lands, Kriemhild chose to forcefully remove the tribe from their territory, but this would cause other settlements on the Isle to see Kriemhild as a threat, and together drove the empire off the continent. The newly formed nation of Arfordolia kept Kriemhild's old colony in the south, but hasn't tried to expand its borders further. Since then, the Wayakeskwens have split, some trying to build new homes deeper in the mountains, and others trying to integrate with Arfordolian society. The crew might encounter:

  • The foundations of long-gone wood buildings and long-dead skeletons being reclaimed by plants.
  • A Wayakeskwen community (of the Ayoskatikwa tribe) of humans, firbolgs, and gnomes gathering to share food, songs, and stories of their past.

Windswept Towns

Strong winds from the south blow in along the coast and through the mountains, cooling the climate all year round. On barren hillsides, this makes the colder seasons especially brutal, so villages often move to shelters near hot springs or in caves during the colder months. Along the coasts, the winds bring in many merchants and travelers during mild summer conditions, with small permanent populations choosing to weather out the harsh winters. The crew might encounter:

  • Town marketplaces overflowing with travelers and merchants selling unique goods in the balmy summer air.
  • Securely boarded up houses, inns, and other buildings while people are for the winter.
