2025 - Reading & Review

Another year means another review, and another event means more reading! This article contains my reflections on 2025, plans for 2026, and some of my favorite articles others wrote for WorldEmber last month. Read on, or skip ahead to what section interests you the most.

2025 Retrospective

Welp, 2025 sure was a year, wasn't it? As I predicted in my 2024 Review, I had fewer notifications for my followers in 2025, but not because I wasn't creating. Despite health, politics, and grief, I still accomplished all of my major goals for the year and managed some extras I'm quite proud of.

Goals

I published my secret project, talos' character creator, in early 2025. It got featured by WA and formed the basis of my WorldEmber scavenger hunt. Including backstory secrets in every article adds to my writing time, contributing to the fewer notifications, but I think the results are worth it.
I also finished a draft of my current novel, helped by the weekly writing group I started over the summer. I've loved hosting friends every weekend, and the dedicated writing time has made me both more productive and less stressed about my weekday productivity.

Extras

I took a new approach to Summer Camp, creating a short-term project for only that event. It was incredibly rewarding and cathartic, and I even won a prompt with one of those articles. I talk more about the experience in my SC25 overview.
wow that's a lot of stars was nominated for Best World, I joined the editorial team for the World of Worlds, and I published more guides here. In the background, I've created private "playground" Worlds - places to toy with interesting ideas, without the stress of Being Perceived. Maybe some of those ideas will become public some day.

Statistics

Stats aren't a measure of success, nor are they a goal I aim for, but I find them fun to review and see how they change over time. Expand the spoiler for basic stats for wow that's a lot of stars over the years. All "per article" averages include drafts. While I do have other Worlds, talos is the only one I put dedicated effort into throughout the year.

2026 Goals

I used to post monthly updates to my WA author page, at which time I also updated my Development Timeline. However, changes to community posts combined with doing more work off WA meant I fell out of that habit. Those updates helped me feel accomplished and stay motivated, so I'm trying a new format that might help me stick with monthly updates. For other goals:

Visitor's Center

Another way to connect readers with what interests them. This is mostly done and I plan to publish it in early 2026.

A draft or two

I've completed one draft, but what about second draft? I'm hoping to complete novel draft #2 and possibly start #3.

A new campaign?

I miss running games. I likely can't run a long campaign, but I'd love to run a few one-shots or something short.

Lessons Learned

Reviewing your progress regularly reminds you of how much you've done! Co-working with friends helps productivity and relieves stress. Short-term projects are rejuvenating breaks from long-term ones. Creations don't need to be public to be satisfying and worthwhile.

Reading

The official challenge for New Year's Resolutions is to pick five articles from others and write your own worldbuilding inspired by them, but I'm exhausted from WorldEmber and need a break before I get back to writing. Seeing as I've lots of notifications I'd love to read, I'll be ignoring the rules and instead sharing some WorldEmber faves from authors I follow. If you'd like to see some more favorites from other authors, check out my shortlist for the Organization category.
I could write pages about why these articles are so good, but I don't have the energy to do that this time. The most important lessons I've learned haven't been from any individual article, but from my relationships with their writers. Learning to let go of plans, to branch off to something new, to sit back when needed, and to celebrate any and all successes. So to everyone who's shared these lessons, congratulations on all you've done, and may we all enter 2026 a little wiser than before.

Author's Notes

Next on my list is actually reading others' NYR articles, to celebrate their successes, cheer them on in their goals, and link back to any that feature my articles. Though if I'm honest, one of my favorite parts is seeing how many times my friends' articles are featured.
