Every April, World Anvil challenges worldbuilders to write an adventure, typically in the form of a one-shot for a tabletop RPG. Starting in 2024, they've also allowed short story submissions, which is my personal preference. Historically, I typically write novels (80k+ words) or flash fiction (700- words). I've been thrilled to have an added excuse to practice stories in the mid-range.
For the 2024 event, I wrote the Mapmaker's Dilemma for wow that's a lot of stars. This short story was inspired by a conversation with my husband regarding the struggles of those who maintain interstellar maps used across the galactic sector.
2025
Assuming short stories continue to be accepted, I'm incredibly excited for the next event. There are so many adventures to be had in my sci-fi world, and I love exploring them through prose. It's also great practice for writing tighter prose and focusing on what's really important.
