Adanum Settlement in Maelan | World Anvil

Adanum

Adanum is still a very young town, currently trying to find its place in the larger Numian Empire and on Vrinn Island. While it started out as military outpost it has slowly developed into a proper town.   It serves now, as the empire's representative on Vrinn Island, and houses therefore embassies from both the Waitana Tribes and the Zaphrian Dynasty.   Day to day activities are still very much centered around survival and the war against the Lizardfolk.

Demographics

Humans make up the majority of the people of Adanum. There's also a few Dwarves, supporting the Numian military forces. A few Goliath and Drow can also be seen around town. There is one Tiefling in town, Xendros, owner of the Merkimonum. As Adanum is a port town, individuals of other races can also be seen from time to time.

Defences

Adanum lies within the thick jungle of Vrinn island. Any large force will likely not approach through the jungle. Nonethless, the south-east side of Adanum is protected by a solid stone wall. Guards are stationed at the gate and on the walls at all times. The north-eastern part of town is mostly exposed. The jungle, however, has been mostly trimmed down to prevent a hidde approach of an enemy force. Until, a suitable location for a wall can be found, the northern part of the town is mostly protected by the House of Aerin. The house of Aerin also serves as a fortified keep for the Numian military, built upon a high point of the town to provide a good view of the jungle line.   Adanum itself lies at the heart of the Numian Bay. Therefore an approach by sea can only come from one direction. Two Numian war galleons are stationed within the bay to scare of potential attackers.

Industry & Trade

The two gold mines outside of town are the main trading good of Adanum and the majore source of additional income, as most of the gold is brought back to the empire and sold there. The other professions in Adanum focus mostly about keeping the large military presence functioning. Fishers and farmers to keep the soldiers fed, and a lot of merchants to keep the soldiers equipped as well as taking used equipment of the military's hand.   Due to the large military presence, Adanum does not yet produce enough food to sustain itself, and it wasn't deemed a priority as the town recieived regular shipments from the empire.

Guilds and Factions

As Adanum is part of the Numian Empire's expansion into new territory, the Numian military plays a major role in the town's day to day life. While they are not directly in charge, as they report to the local Praetur, they are still responsible for the town's protection and safety from the outside, as well as on the inside.   Representatives of the Waitana Tribes and the Zaphrian Dynasty, also have a presence in town. And while they do not have a direct say on how the town is run, their opinions carry some weight among the citizenry.   The Ferrium Mining Company manages the two gold mines outside of town and is thus responsible for the majority of the town's income. As such, they can always find a friendly ear among the governing body.   The Lignarius Building Company is responsible for the construction of new buildings in town. They do not have any direct influence in the development of the town, but if you don't want your building crumbling down above you, it is best to stay on their good side. They work closely with the military to establish the town's defenses.

History

Adanum is still a very young town, but it has developed rather quickly due to the continued push by the Numian Empire to establisha foothold on Vrinn Island.   At first, Adanum served as a landing point for the Numian military forces. As such, the initial purpose of most buildings was to house the military forces. The goal was to maximize the ration between people and space. However, as more and more civilians followed in the wake of the empire, the buildings got restructured to offer more spacious living conditions.   Adanum has developed into a town of its own, especially after most of the military left for Diernum. The Ferrium Mining Company struck gold, literally, as they discovered two large gold deposits not far from the town, and easily accessible via river. Gold became the towns only, and most lucrative export, which allowed it to further develop.   The influx of people, however, has been to great for the town to develop adequate self-sufficiency. As of yet Adanum does not produce enough food to feed its own population, as well as the military forces stationed in Diernum.

Architecture

Most buildings are made out of wood from the local jungle, built upon a stone foundation. Any stone structures in Adanum are made out of stone imported from the empire, as Adanum's surroundings do not offer easy access to natural sone deposits. Most buildings have a simple roof covered in palmtree leaves to keep to rain away. There is no need to trap the heat inside, as the tropical climate is quite warm all year round.   The individual buildings are rather large and usually house multiple families. Outside the main door one can usually find a small panel indicating the names of those who live there. Some family homes also serve as workshops. In those cases a small symbol indicating the family's profession can be found next to the name.   There is one structure in Adanum which predates the arrival of the empire, Market Bridge. The bridge is made out of a solid dark gray granite stone. It is extremely sturdy, and doesn't show any significant signs of wear and tear. The bridge is also wider than you would expect. This allowed for additional structures to be built on top of it. Most of these structures serve as further market stalls and workshops, hence the name Market Bridge.

Geography

Adanum lies at the heart of the Numian Bay, at the Mouth of the Golden River. Therefore, Adanum's location is rather protected from the stronger winds and waves of the surrounding Azure Sea. The bay itself presents mostly steep cliffs and thick jungle fauna. There are very few viable spots for settlements and ship landings. Initially, Adanum benefitted from the flatlands surrounding the Golden River, but as the town grew structures had to be placed higher and further into the jungle.

Natural Resources

As Adanum was established as a military outpost first, it relied heavily on resources provided by the empire. Developing of a self-sustaining infrastructure wasn't their first order of business. Over the years, however, Adanum has started to develop their fishing industry and start planting crops, those common in the empire, as well as more local plantations. Despite these efforts the town is not yet self-sufficient, in large part due the fact that it not only needs to feed its own population but also the vast military forces stationed in Diernum.   Outside the town within the jungle mountains, the Ferrium Mining Company opened up two mines. Both tapping large gold deposits. The gold, however, gets mostly transported back to the mainland empire.   The jungle wood outside the town provides prime building material to further develop the town. As such it is not being exported just yet.
